Refrigerator Not Turning On or Dead After a Power Outage: What to Check

The refrigerator is silent. Either the lights are off too and the whole thing looks unplugged, or the lights are on and nothing is running, no hum, no fan, and the inside is getting warm. In South Florida this call spikes after every storm, every brownout and every power flicker, and the cause depends on which of those two pictures you are looking at. Here is what we check, in order, and what each one costs.

Lights off, completely dead

Start at the wall. Plug a lamp into the refrigerator’s outlet. If the lamp is dead, the breaker has tripped or a GFCI outlet upstream has, which happens constantly in garages and on kitchen circuits after a surge. Reset it. If the outlet works and the fridge is still dead, the power cord, the door switch on older units, or the main control board has failed. A board taken out by a surge is the most common storm-week repair we do, $250 to $480 depending on the brand, and we check the outlet and surge protection so the new one survives the next storm.

Lights on, nothing running

This is the picture that gets misdiagnosed. The fridge has power, the interior light works, the display may be lit, and the compressor and fans are silent. Owners are told it is the compressor. It usually is not.

• Demo or showroom mode. Samsung shows OF OF, LG and others show a similar message. A button combination turned it on by accident. We reset it in the visit, and on Samsung you can try holding Energy Saver and Fridge for five seconds yourself.
• The start relay and overload. A small module on the side of the compressor that starts it. When it fails the compressor clicks every few minutes and never starts, or stays silent. $130 to $240, the cheapest possible answer to a warm fridge.
• The main control board. On GE, Whirlpool and Frigidaire French door and side-by-side units, the board stops sending power to the compressor and the fans while the lights stay on. It looks exactly like a dead compressor from the front. $250 to $480. We test the board outputs before condemning anything.
• The inverter board. LG, Samsung and newer Whirlpool units drive the compressor through an inverter. A failed inverter leaves the compressor silent or clicking. $260 to $460.
• The compressor. Last on the list because it is the most expensive and the least common. We confirm it with winding readings and pressures, not by guessing. $900 to $1,700 out of warranty; LG and Samsung inverter compressors carry a ten-year part warranty on most models, which cuts that to labor and refrigerant, $420 to $680.

After a storm or an outage: what actually happens

Power comes back in surges and sags. A sag can stall the compressor mid-cycle; when it tries to restart against pressure it trips its overload, and it keeps tripping until the pressure equalizes. Leave it plugged in for an hour before assuming it is broken. A surge does the opposite kind of damage: it takes out the control board or the inverter outright, and no waiting fixes that. A refrigerator on a plug-in surge protector rated for motors survives most of these; a refrigerator on a bare outlet does not.

Before you call

• Lamp test the outlet. Reset the breaker and any GFCI on the circuit.
• Check the display for OF OF, demo, or a locked panel.
• Listen at the back for clicking every few minutes. Clicking is a relay or inverter trying; silence is a board or a cord.
• If the outage was in the last hour, wait. The compressor may be waiting for pressure to equalize.
• Keep the doors closed. A full freezer holds for 48 hours closed; a fridge section for about 4.
