An air conditioner in South Florida runs eleven months a year and rests in January, if it rests at all. That is why the parts that fail here fail early: capacitors that cook in a 140°F attic, contactors pitted from ten thousand cycles a summer, drain lines that grow biofilm by August, and condenser coils eaten by salt air within a mile of the water. Most AC repair calls we take are one of those four. The compressor, the part everyone fears, is a small minority.

Split systems with an air handler in the closet or garage and a condenser outside, package units on the roof of a townhouse, heat pumps, and the ductless mini splits that condos are switching to. If it moves cold air through a building, it is on the list, and HVAC repair on the heating side of a heat pump is the same visit. Mini splits have their own page: mini split repair.

AC unit repair, problem by problem

AC not cooling, air blowing warm
Start outside. If the condenser fan is not turning, it is a capacitor, a contactor or the fan motor, in that order of likelihood, and the first two are cheap. If the fan runs and the compressor does not, it is the compressor capacitor or the compressor itself. If everything outside runs and the air is still warm, then we go looking for a refrigerant leak or a frozen coil inside. The order saves you money because the cheap answer is checked first.
Water on the floor by the air handler
The condensate drain is blocked, or the float switch that should have shut the system down failed to. This is the most common AC call in Broward between June and October. We clear the line to the outside, flush the pan, test the float switch, and add a cleanout if the line does not have one.
Ice on the copper line or the coil
Airflow or charge. A filter that has not been changed since spring, a coil packed with dust, a dead blower motor, or low refrigerant. We check airflow before touching the gauges, because a frozen coil from a dirty filter and a frozen coil from a leak look identical and cost very different money.
Breaker trips when the AC starts
A compressor drawing locked-rotor amps because its start capacitor is dead, a shorted fan motor, or a compressor that has grounded internally. We meter it before condemning anything. A hard-start kit on an aging compressor buys years for the price of a part.
Runs all day, never reaches the set temperature
Low charge, a fouled condenser coil, undersized ductwork, or a system that is simply too small for the load after someone added a sunroom. We measure supply and return temperatures and the refrigerant pressures, and we tell you if the fix is a repair or a conversation about capacity.
Loud humming, buzzing, or grinding outside
Humming with no fan movement is a capacitor. Buzzing is usually a contactor chattering. Grinding is a fan motor bearing on its way out. Each is a same-visit part on the common brands.

AC installation and replacement

When a system is past twelve years and the compressor goes, replacement usually beats repair, and the new unit will cool for less money each month. A straight replacement of a 3-ton split system with matched air handler and condenser runs $6,800 to $11,500 installed depending on efficiency rating, ductwork condition and electrical. We size the system to the house rather than copying the tonnage that was there, because a surprising share of South Florida homes are running oversized units that short-cycle and never dry the air.

Repair or replace

Capacitors, contactors, motors, drains, boards and coil cleaning are worth doing at any age. The decision point is a compressor or an evaporator coil on a system past ten years, where the repair reaches a third of the replacement cost and buys you a machine that is still ten years old. Refrigerant matters too: systems on R-22 are past economical repair on any sealed-system failure because the gas itself has become the expensive part. We give both numbers and let you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Do you do AC repair near me in Miami-Dade and Broward?
Yes, across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, seven days a week. Same-day slots most days when you call before noon at (754) 345-4515, and no-cooling calls in summer go to the front of the line.
Do you offer emergency AC repair?
Same-day, seven days a week, 7 AM to 9 PM. A house with no air in August is not a next-week appointment here, and a call before noon almost always gets a technician that afternoon.
How much does AC repair cost?
Capacitors, contactors and drain work run $140 to $340 and cover most calls. Motors run $380 to $860, boards $380 to $780. Refrigerant leak repairs run $480 to $1,400, and a compressor $1,600 to $3,200. The $59 service call is free when you approve the repair.
My AC is blowing but not cooling. What is it?
Most often a capacitor or contactor outside, which is a cheap part. Second most often a frozen coil from a dirty filter or low airflow. A refrigerant leak is third. We check in that order so the cheap cause is ruled in or out first.
Why is there water under my air handler?
A blocked condensate line, and a float switch that should have stopped the system before the pan overflowed. Both are routine: we clear the line, test or replace the switch, and add a cleanout so the next time it is a five-minute job.
Is it worth repairing a 12-year-old AC?
For a capacitor, motor or drain, yes, always. For a compressor or an evaporator coil, usually no, because the repair reaches a third of a new system and the old unit costs more to run every month. We quote both so the decision is made with real numbers.
How much does a new AC system cost installed?
A 3-ton split system with a matched air handler and condenser runs $6,800 to $11,500 installed, depending on efficiency rating, the state of the ductwork and the electrical. We size to the house rather than copying whatever tonnage was there before.
