A garbage disposal that hums but will not turn is the single most common call in this category, and it is usually the cheapest thing we fix all week. The motor is fine; something is wedged between the impeller and the shredder ring. What it costs you is the visit, not the part. The calls that actually cost money are the leaks, because water from the disposal runs down the cabinet base and nobody sees it until the particle board swells.

Garbage disposal repair, problem by problem

Hums but will not spin
Something is jammed at the impeller. We cut power, free the flywheel from below with the hex wrench, pull the object out of the chamber, and reset the overload. If the motor has been humming against a jam for weeks the windings may already be cooked, and we tell you that before charging for a repair that will not hold.
Completely dead, no hum
Tripped overload, a failed wall switch or air switch, a loose wire nut in the box, or the motor itself. We meter the circuit before touching the unit, because half of these are a $0 part and a five-minute fix.
Leaking under the sink
Three places leak and they are not equal. The sink flange at the top means new plumber’s putty and a re-seat. The dishwasher inlet or discharge gasket means a $6 part. Water weeping from the bottom seam of the housing means the internal seal is gone and the unit is done: that one is a replacement, not a repair, and we will say so.
Loud grinding or rattling
Usually a foreign object still in the chamber. When it is not, the shredder ring or the impellers have worn, and on a unit past eight years the honest math points to replacement.
Water backs up into the sink
The clog is normally downstream, in the P-trap or the branch line, not in the disposal. We clear the line and check the discharge slope. Running a disposal into a slow drain is what turns a clog into a flood.
Dishwasher will not drain
On a new disposal the knockout plug in the dishwasher inlet was never removed, and on an old one that inlet is packed solid. Ten-minute fix that gets blamed on the dishwasher constantly.

Repair or replace

Jams, switches, flanges and gaskets are worth repairing at any age. A leak from the bottom housing seam or a motor that trips within seconds of starting is the end of the unit, and on anything past eight to ten years replacement is the cheaper answer over the next two years. A 3/4 HP unit installed lands between $320 and $520, so we do not pretend a $300 repair on a dying disposal makes sense.

One local note: South Florida kitchens run disposals harder than most, because so many condos have no space for a trash chute run and everything goes down the sink. If you are replacing anyway, going from 1/2 HP to 3/4 HP is the difference between a unit that jams monthly and one that does not.
