Half of the Samsung refrigerator calls we take in South Florida are the same call: the ice maker in a French door RF23, RF26 or RF28 has frozen into a block, drips into the bin, and the fridge section is running warm behind it. Samsung sells more French door refrigerators here than anyone except LG, and this one design fault keeps our trucks busy from Aventura to Boca. The fix is not a new ice maker. Samsung refrigerator problems, in the order we see them
Ice maker frozen solid, ice bin wet, dispenser jammed
The French door ice maker sits in the fridge section and is cooled by a duct from the freezer. The compartment was never sealed well against the warm, humid fridge air around it, so frost builds until the auger locks. Chipping the ice out lasts three weeks. The repair that lasts is Samsung’s updated kit: a new ice room seal, a drain clip and a revised fill tube, plus the auger motor if it burned out fighting the ice. On RF28 units we also replace the ice maker itself when the tray heater has failed.
Fridge warm, freezer fine, fan noise that comes and goes
The evaporator coil behind the back panel of the fridge section has iced over and the fan blades are hitting it. Samsung twin-cooling units have a separate evaporator for the fridge with its own defrost heater and sensor, and when that sensor drifts the coil never fully defrosts. We thaw it, replace the sensor or heater, and check the drain so the next defrost cycle has somewhere to send the water.
Water under the crisper drawers
The defrost drain under the fridge evaporator is blocked, usually by ice, and meltwater runs into the bottom of the fridge. Samsung issued a revised drain clip for exactly this. We clear the drain, fit the clip, and confirm the defrost cycle before we leave.
22E, 21E, 5E, 8E and other codes on the display
22E is the fridge fan, 21E the freezer fan, 5E the fridge defrost sensor, 8E the ice maker sensor, 41E and 42E the ice room fan. Each code maps to one part in Samsung’s diagnostic table. Tell dispatch the code when you call and the technician arrives with the part on the truck.
Not cooling on either side, clicking from the back
The inverter board is failing to start the compressor, or the compressor itself has lost compression. We measure current draw and pressures before quoting, because an inverter board is a $300 fix and a compressor is a $1,000 fix, and from the front they look the same. Samsung digital inverter compressors carry a ten-year part warranty on most models.
Display shows OF OF, nothing cools
Demo or cooling-off mode, turned on by accident with a button combination. We reset it in the visit at no charge beyond the service call. Worth calling before assuming the worst.
Water dispenser slow or dripping, filter light stuck
A filter past its date, a frozen line in the freezer door on side-by-side units, or a dispenser valve that no longer closes. The filter is the free answer; we check it first. A dripping dispenser after a filter change is usually air in the line and clears itself in a day.
Family Hub screen black or frozen
The door tablet runs its own board and power supply. A black screen with a cooling fridge is the screen assembly or its supply; a black screen with a warm fridge is the main board. We test both before ordering, because the screen assembly is not cheap and it is not always the culprit.

About the Samsung ice maker class action
The 2017 lawsuit over French door ice makers ended without a payout, so there is no check coming. What did come out of it is the repair kit Samsung engineered while the case was open, and that kit is what we install. It seals the ice room against fridge air, moves the drain, and replaces the fill tube that froze. On an RF28 that has been chipped out three times, the kit plus a fresh auger motor runs $280 to $480 and the problem does not come back. Samsung will sometimes cover the parts on units under five years old if you push; we can tell you at the visit whether yours qualifies.
Repair or replace
Fans, sensors, drains, valves, ice maker kits and boards are worth doing on any Samsung refrigerator under twelve years old. A compressor inside its ten-year part warranty is worth doing at almost any age. An out-of-warranty compressor on a unit past nine years is where we quote a new refrigerator beside the repair. Family Hub units are the exception in the other direction: the screen can cost as much as a basic fridge, and if the cooling side is healthy we say so.
