An outdoor kitchen on the Intracoastal is about the hardest place in the country to keep an appliance alive. Salt air gets into the igniter module. Rain gets into the light boards. Pollen and salt pack the fridge condenser, and the whole island sits under a sun that bakes valves and gaskets ten months a year. A built-in Lynx or DCS grill still costs $4,000 to $12,000 to replace, so fixing a $300 burner is easy math. What salt air and rain do to an outdoor kitchen
Within a mile of the ocean the failure clock runs about twice as fast. The first thing to go is the igniter, because the spark module lives in a low corner of the island where water collects. Next the light boards, then the stainless burners, which rust from the inside out where the flame ports concentrate heat and salt. On the refrigeration side the condenser coil is the weak point: it pulls air across itself all day and filters nothing, so by the second summer it wears a felt of pollen and salt that stops it from shedding heat. The compressor runs hot, the overload trips, and the beer is warm on Saturday.
What helps: a cover on the grill when it is not in use, a hose-down of the condenser every couple of months, and shutting the gas at the tank or the line before a hurricane if the island is in the surge zone. Water in a gas manifold after a storm is a real repair and a real hazard.
Outdoor refrigerators, ice makers and the compressor question
An outdoor-rated Perlick or Lynx refrigerator sells for $3,000 to $6,000, and a compressor swap on one runs $700 to $1,200 with parts and labor. That is worth doing on a unit under eight years old with a clean cabinet. It is not worth doing on a $900 beverage center, and we say that before the tech opens the truck. Boards, fans, relays: those are the real cause more often anyway. A true compressor failure usually means the condenser was never cleaned.
Ice makers are their own animal. Scotsman Brilliance and Lynx clear-ice units want a descale every six months on our water; skip it and the pump fails, then the water valve, in that order. Repair or replace
A built-in grill is almost always repaired, because the cutout in the stone is sized to it and a new one means a mason. Lynx, DCS, Alfresco, Twin Eagles and Coyote still stock burners, valves, igniters for grills fifteen years old. The exception is a manifold rusted through behind the control panel on a grill that lived uncovered on the beach; at that point the parts list is the whole grill. Outdoor fridges get replaced when the cabinet or the door frame has corroded, because a compressor in a rotten box is money spent twice.
Beverage centers under $1,000 new are usually a replace.
