An LG refrigerator that stops cooling in a Miami kitchen is a same-day problem, and it is usually one of two things: the linear compressor, or a frozen evaporator fan. They look identical from the front. The difference in price is about $1,200, so the diagnosis matters more here than on any other appliance we work on. LG refrigerator problems and what they actually are
Fridge warm, freezer still cold, fan noise then silence
The evaporator coil in the freezer has iced over and stopped the fan, or the fan motor itself failed. LG French door units throw ER FF (freezer fan) or ER rF (refrigerator fan) when this happens. The cause behind the ice is usually a defrost sensor or defrost heater that stopped cycling. We thaw the coil, replace the failed part, and check the door gaskets, because a gasket that lets Miami humidity in will re-ice the coil within a month.
Both sides warm, compressor running but not cooling
This is the linear compressor call. LG’s inverter linear compressors in units built roughly 2014 through 2020 lose compression without seizing, so the machine hums, the fans run, and nothing gets cold. We confirm it with pressures and current draw, not by guessing. If the serial number falls inside LG’s ten-year compressor part warranty, the compressor is free and you pay labor and refrigerant only. We carry the updated FLB and FLA series replacements.
Ice maker stopped, or ice is thin and hollow
On French door LG units the ice maker sits in the fridge door and depends on a small duct feeding cold air from the freezer. A blocked duct, a failed fill valve, or a stuck ice maker motor are the usual causes. Craft Ice makers have their own mold and heater and fail separately from the cube maker.
Water dispenser slow or dead
Frozen water line in the door, a failed dispenser valve, or a filter that was never changed. We check the filter first because it is the free answer. A door line that froze once will freeze again if the door heater has failed, so we test that as well.
Water under the crisper drawers or on the floor
A clogged defrost drain. Meltwater from the defrost cycle has nowhere to go and runs into the fridge section, then out the front. We clear the drain, treat it, and confirm the defrost cycle runs so the water stops.
Error codes Er dH, Er IS, Er 1F, Er CO
dH is a defrost heater fault, IS is the ice maker sensor, 1F is the ice fan, CO is a communication error between the main board and the display. Each one points to a specific part on LG’s diagnostic map, which is why the code on the display is the first thing dispatch will ask you for.
Loud clicking or buzzing from the back
Inverter board trying to start a compressor that will not start, or a condenser fan hitting a wire. The inverter board is a $250 fix. If the compressor is the reason it will not start, that is the compressor story above.

The LG compressor warranty, in plain terms
LG covers the linear compressor part for ten years from the date of purchase on nearly every French door and side-by-side sold in the United States since 2014. The labor is not covered after the first year, and neither is the refrigerant, so a compressor job on a six-year-old LFXS runs about $500 instead of $1,400. Bring the purchase receipt or the serial number; we can look up the build date from the serial if the receipt is gone. If the unit was part of the 2020 settlement class, ask us, because some owners still have extended labor coverage they do not know about.
Repair or replace
Fans, sensors, heaters, valves, ice makers and boards are worth doing on any LG refrigerator under twelve years old. A compressor inside its part warranty is worth doing at almost any age. A compressor out of warranty on a unit past nine years is where we start quoting a new refrigerator alongside the repair, because the repair reaches half the price of the machine. A counter-depth or built-in look unit tips the math back toward repair, since replacement means a cabinet fit as well as a fridge.
