GE refrigerator problems and what they actually are
Both sides warm, lights on, nothing running
On GE and Profile French door and side-by-side units this is the main control board far more often than the compressor. The board stops sending power to the compressor and the fans, so the refrigerator goes silent. We test the board outputs and the compressor windings before quoting, because the difference is $300 against $1,000 and from the front they look identical.
Fridge warm, freezer cold, fan noise then quiet
The evaporator coil in the freezer has iced over and stopped the fan, because the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat or the board’s defrost timing failed. We thaw the coil, replace the failed part, and check the gaskets so Miami humidity does not re-ice it in a month.
Ice maker stopped, or ice is small and hollow
A failed ice maker module, a stuck fill valve, or a frozen fill tube. On French door units with the ice maker in the fridge door, the duct that feeds cold air from the freezer has to be clear. Thin or hollow ice is low water fill, which is a filter or a valve before it is the ice maker.
Water dispenser slow, dead or dripping
A filter past its date, a frozen line in the door on side-by-side units, or a dispenser valve that no longer closes. The filter is the free answer and we check it first. A door line that froze once will freeze again if the door heater has failed.
Keurig dispenser dead on Café and Profile
The K-Cup brewer in the door has its own heater, pump and board. A dead brewer with a working water dispenser is the brewer module; we test it separately, because it is not a cheap part and it is not always the culprit.
Water under the crisper drawers or on the floor
A clogged defrost drain. Meltwater from the defrost cycle backs up into the fridge section and runs out the front. We clear and treat the drain and confirm the defrost cycle runs.
Loud clicking or buzzing from the back
The start relay or the inverter trying to start a compressor. A failed relay is a $150 fix; if the compressor will not start with a good relay, that is the compressor conversation, and we have it honestly with pressures and current readings in hand.
Runs constantly, never cold enough, warm to the touch on the sides
Condenser coils packed with dust and pet hair under the unit, a dead condenser fan, or a sealed-system fault. We clean the coils and test the fan first, because that solves most of these in South Florida kitchens where the fridge sits against a warm exterior wall.
