A water softener is the appliance that stops the other appliances from dying, and when it quits, nobody notices for a month, until the shower door spots up and the kettle grows a crust.

Water softener problems, cause and fix

Water is hard again, softener looks fine
Usually the control valve stopped cycling, or the resin bed is exhausted. Resin lasts eight to twelve years here, less on well water with iron. We test hardness at the tap, check the valve through a manual regeneration, and tell you which one it is instead of selling a new system by default.
Salt bridge: full tank, no salt use
A crust forms across the salt and the water underneath never touches it, so the machine regenerates with plain water. Common in humid garages, which is most of them here. We break the bridge, clean the brine well and reset the draw.
Brine tank full of water
Blocked injector, a failed brine valve, or a drain line restriction. The tank should draw down each cycle; standing water means the draw stage never completed.
Salty taste at the tap
The system is not rinsing properly, usually a stuck valve or a drain restriction leaving brine in the resin. Not dangerous, but it means the cycle is broken and hardness is coming through too.
Pressure dropped through the house
Resin fines clogging the distributor, or a partially closed bypass someone left after a filter change. We check pressure before and after the unit, which settles the question in two minutes.
RO unit slow or tasting flat
Membrane at end of life, a clogged pre-filter, or a bad tank bladder. Under our TDS the membrane works hard, so intervals here are shorter than the box promises.

Valves, injectors, floats and brine parts are worth repairing on any system that is otherwise sound. Resin replacement is the decision point: on a unit past twelve years, the cost of new resin plus labor lands close enough to a new softener that replacement usually wins, and the new unit will be sized correctly for the house instead of whatever the builder installed. We give you both numbers and let you pick.

One local note worth money: if you own a built-in coffee machine, an ice maker or a steam oven, the softener is what protects them. We service all of those, and the pattern is consistent, houses with working water treatment call us for those appliances far less often.
