La-Z-Boy power recliner, reclining sofa and lift chair repair at home, from Miami and Boca Raton to Tampa, Sarasota and Naples. A chair that went dead, a headrest or lumbar that stopped, a power supply with no light, a remote that works one way only. The $59 service call is credited to the repair you approve.

Most power La-Z-Boy pieces from recent years run on the PowerReclineXR+ system: a power supply on the cord, a motor for the back and footrest, and on many models separate motors for a power headrest and lumbar. The La-Z-Boy manual rates that power supply at 29 volts DC, 2.5 amps, and puts a green light on it. That light is the first thing we look at. If it is dark, nothing further down the line is going to move, however good the motor is.

What we check on a La-Z-Boy

The outlet and the cord
La-Z-Boy tells owners to plug the chair straight into a wall outlet, with no extension cord, adapter or surge strip in between. A chair that runs on a power strip and quits now and then is often just that.
The battery backup
On models with a backup, two 9-volt batteries sit inside the power supply and give roughly two cycles without power. La-Z-Boy says to replace them every six months and after every outage. With summer storms knocking the power out, that can mean several battery changes a year.
Headrest or lumbar only
When the recline works but the headrest or lumbar does not, the plug from the back comes first: the headrest connector is blue, on the left, the lumbar connector is grey, on the right. A loose plug there looks exactly like a dead motor.
The motor itself
The manual says there are no serviceable parts inside the motor, so a failed one is replaced as a unit. We read the part number on its label and order that motor, because a look-alike with a different stroke or plug will not fit.
Reclining sofas and duo pieces
On a power sofa each seat has its own motor, and the motors reach the power supply through a Y-cable. One seat quitting usually points to that seat’s cable, switch or motor. The duo line, which looks like a regular sofa, reclines from buttons on the arm.
The footrest stops while closing
Look under it before anything else. A shoe, a toy or a remote caught in the linkage stops the footrest, and the motor keeps pushing against it.

Running time

La-Z-Boy rates the system for one minute of continuous movement followed by nine minutes of rest. Running the chair up and down several times in a row goes past that, so if it quits after a long run of button presses, give it ten minutes before calling.

Warranty: what La-Z-Boy pays and what you pay

La-Z-Boy covers electrical parts and motors for three years, and labor for one year. The reclining mechanism carries a lifetime warranty on parts, again with one year of labor. Shipping of parts, in-home inspection fees and hauling the piece to the store are on the owner. In practice that means in the second and third year the part can be free while the visit is not. La-Z-Boy lets owners order warranty parts through the store or Comfort Care and have them installed. If you already have the part, we can put it in.

Inside the first year, start with the store where you bought the piece. After year three the parts are paid too, and we source them by the label on the motor or the power supply.

La-Z-Boy lift chairs

La-Z-Boy power lift recliners use the same kind of power supply, remote and motor, with a heavier lift mechanism. In 2017 La-Z-Boy recalled power supplies sold with some Luxury-Lift and Power Lift chairs (lot #150113) because the cover could crack and expose the wiring. If you own an older chair from those lines, check the recall notice on cpsc.gov. More on lift chairs: lift chair repair.

Repair or replace?

A James power rocking recliner with headrest and lumbar lists at $2,029 on the La-Z-Boy site, and the matching power sofa at $4,099. A power supply, a remote, a cable or a single motor costs a fraction of that, so on a sound frame repair is the cheaper road. You get a written price after the diagnosis, before anything is ordered.

Frequently asked questions

My La-Z-Boy power recliner stopped working. What should I check first?
The green light on the power supply. If it is off, check that the chair is plugged straight into a wall outlet, not a power strip, and that the outlet works. If the light is on and the chair still does not move, the cable, the remote or the motor is next.
Only the headrest or the lumbar stopped. Is the motor dead?
Not necessarily. Those functions plug in separately from the back, blue for the headrest on the left and grey for the lumbar on the right. A loose connector there is common and much cheaper than a motor.
Will a repair by you affect my La-Z-Boy warranty?
La-Z-Boy lets owners order warranty parts and have them installed, and its labor coverage runs one year. Inside that first year, call your store first. After that, we can install a warranty part you received or supply the part ourselves.
How often should I change the backup batteries?
La-Z-Boy says every six months and after every power outage. The two 9-volt batteries in the power supply give about two cycles, enough to close the chair when the power goes out.
Do you repair La-Z-Boy lift chairs and duo sofas?
Yes. Lift chairs and duo pieces use the same family of power supplies, remotes and motors. The repair is done at your home.
