A pool pump in South Florida runs ten months a year, sometimes twelve, on a concrete pad in full sun with salt in the air. It wears faster than the manual promises. The upside is that most of what stops a pump is a $150 to $350 part, and a motor swap keeps a good wet end going for years. The calls we take sound like this: the pump hums and will not start, it loses prime every morning, the breaker trips, or the variable-speed display shows a code nobody at the pool store could explain.

One rule we follow on every visit: check the electrical and the suction side before blaming the motor. A pump that cavitates on an air leak for a month will cook its seal and then its bearings, and the customer gets sold a motor when a $15 o-ring started it.
Variable-speed pumps and the drive board
Florida’s energy code has pushed nearly every new or replacement pool pump over 1 HP toward variable-speed. The pool runs at 1,200 rpm most of the day, the bill drops by half or better, and the pump is quiet enough that people forget it is on. The trade is complexity. A Pentair IntelliFlo or Hayward TriStar VS carries a drive board bolted to the top of the motor, and that board is what fails, usually from heat, lightning surges, or rain finding its way under the cover.
Drive boards run $500 to $900 installed. That is a real number, so we test before we quote it: incoming voltage, the motor windings, the cable to the automation system, and the drive itself. On IntelliFlo units the “communication error” more often points to the cable or the automation relay than to the drive.
When a drive board fails on a pump past six or seven years, we will tell you straight that a new VS pump at $1,400 to $2,600 installed is usually the better spend. A single-speed pump that dies gets replaced with a VS unit almost every time, because the utility rebate plus the electric savings pays the difference within two summers.
Salt cell systems
Hayward AquaRite with a T-Cell 15 and Pentair IntelliChlor IC40 make up most of the salt systems around here. Both scale up with calcium in our hard fill water, and both will flash “inspect cell” or “low salt” on a schedule that has little to do with actual salt. We test salt with a meter, not the display, check the flow switch, acid-clean the plates if they are coated, and read the cell’s hours. A cell past 10,000 hours is done regardless of how clean it looks. Replacement cells run $500 to $900 installed, and a control board on an AquaRite is $350 to $600.

Repair or replace
Capacitors, seals, o-rings and impellers are worth fixing on any pump. A motor swap makes sense when the wet end (housing, basket, diffuser) is sound and the pump is under eight years old. Past that, or when a VS drive fails together with a noisy motor, the repair lands within a few hundred dollars of a new pump that comes with a warranty and a lower electric bill. Hurricane season adds one more case. A pump that sat flooded after a storm surge is a replacement, not a repair, even if it spins. Salt water inside the windings does not come out.
