A dryer is a motor, a heater and a belt, plus a handful of switches and a thermal fuse. That is nearly the whole machine, and every one of those parts is a $20 to $180 component that a technician stocks on the truck. Replace a dryer only if the drum bearing has seized into the cabinet on a very old unit or the cabinet itself has rusted through from years next to a salt-air vent. Almost every other dryer problem is a same-visit repair.
Why dryers stay simple even in 2026
Refrigerators and washers picked up inverter compressors, spider arms and touch boards over the last fifteen years. Dryers mostly did not, because there is not much left to make efficient on a machine that just needs to move heated air through wet fabric. A gas or electric dryer built in 2024 uses the same basic layout as one built in 2004: a motor turns the drum and the blower, a heat source warms the air, a thermostat and thermal fuse keep the heat in range, and a belt ties the motor to the drum. Manufacturers added moisture sensors and a control board with a display, and those do add a new failure point, but the core mechanism did not change the way a washer’s did.
A Pompano Beach case
A 2016 Maytag electric dryer in Pompano Beach stopped producing heat but kept tumbling and running the timer normally. The homeowner assumed the whole unit was near the end and asked for a replacement quote alongside the repair estimate. The cause was the thermal fuse, a safety part that blows when airflow is restricted and the dryer overheats, $18 in parts, $145 installed including the vent inspection that found the actual root cause: a vent run packed with eight years of lint that had never been cleaned. Total repair and vent service: $210. A comparable new electric dryer with delivery and installation runs $700 to $1,100 in South Florida.
Repair cost by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Typical repair |
|---|---|---|
| Runs but no heat | Thermal fuse, heating element, or (gas) igniter and valve coils | $140-320 |
| Tumbles but won’t start reliably | Door switch, start switch, timer | $90-220 |
| Loud squeal or grinding | Drum support rollers, idler pulley, belt | $150-300 |
| Won’t turn at all | Belt, motor, drive motor capacitor | $180-380 |
| Runs hot, shuts off mid-cycle | Blocked vent, restricted airflow, repeat thermal fuse trips | $120-220 (vent service) |
The thermal fuse always has a reason
A blown thermal fuse is a symptom, not a root cause. It blows because the dryer overheated, and the dryer overheated because airflow through the vent was restricted. Replace the fuse without addressing the vent and it blows again within weeks or months. Every no-heat call we run includes checking vent airflow, because South Florida’s humidity keeps lint from drying and clearing on its own the way it might in a drier climate, and long vent runs through townhome and condo construction trap it further. This is the single most preventable repair callback in the category, and it is why a dryer repair visit should always include a vent check, not just a fuse swap.
Gas or electric, the repair logic is the same
A gas dryer adds an igniter and gas valve coils to the parts list, and those are the two components most likely to fail on a gas unit that has lost heat. An electric dryer relies on a heating element instead, usually a coiled nichrome wire in a metal housing that eventually breaks from years of heating and cooling cycles. Both are bolt-in parts, both take a technician under an hour to replace once the dryer is opened, and neither failure says anything about the condition of the motor, drum, belt or blower. A dryer with a dead element or a dead igniter is otherwise a fully working machine.
Stackable and closet-installed units, common in South Florida condos, add one more variable: vent length and the number of bends in the run. A vent that snakes through a long closet run with two or three elbows traps lint faster than a straight shot to an exterior wall, and that shortens the interval between thermal fuse trips if the vent is not cleaned on a regular schedule. We recommend a vent check every twelve to eighteen months on any unit with more than one bend in the run, longer if the dryer sits on an exterior wall with a short, straight vent.
When a dryer is genuinely done
Two situations move a dryer into replace territory. A drum support that has worn into the cabinet itself, not just the rollers, on a unit already 18 to 20 years old, turns into a cabinet-level repair that costs close to replacement. And any dryer with visible rust perforating the drum or cabinet, common on units installed near an outdoor laundry area or a garage exposed to salt air, is a structural problem, not a parts problem. Outside of those two cases, repair is close to always the right call on a dryer, gas or electric, at almost any age.
Check your repair number against a new unit on the repair vs. replace cost calculator, and if the vent has not been serviced in a while, see dryer vent cleaning.
