You loaded the Bosch SHPM88Z75N last night with the after-dinner load, hit Auto, and went upstairs. This morning you came down to a quiet kitchen and an angry display: E15 flashing on the panel, the cycle frozen, and a faint hum from underneath the unit. You checked under the sink, no visible water. You looked at the floor in front of the dishwasher, dry. You opened the unit, dishes still dirty. What now?

E15 on a Bosch dishwasher is one of the most misunderstood error codes in the appliance world. Half the homeowners who get it think they have a major leak. Most of the time they don’t. Most of the time the dishwasher is doing exactly what it’s designed to do: refusing to run because a tiny safety float at the bottom got tripped, often by something as innocuous as a few drops of condensation. Here’s what’s actually happening and what you should check before calling a tech.

What E15 Actually Means

Every Bosch dishwasher has a drain pan underneath the tub. It’s a shallow plastic tray about an inch deep that sits between the bottom of the wash chamber and the kick plate at the floor. Inside that pan is a foam float and a microswitch (Bosch calls it the Aqua-Stop). If any water collects in the drain pan, the float rises, the microswitch trips, and the dishwasher’s control board immediately:

  • Stops the cycle
  • Activates the drain pump (it will run continuously, that’s the hum you hear)
  • Locks out the unit until the float drops back down
  • Displays E15

This is a safety system designed to prevent catastrophic floods. If a hose, pump seal, or door gasket fails and water starts collecting under the unit, the dishwasher shuts itself off before the kitchen turns into Venice. Excellent engineering. The problem is the system also trips on perfectly benign conditions like condensation accumulation during a humid Florida summer.

First Check: How Much Water Is Actually in the Pan?

Before you touch anything else, you need to know if there’s a real leak or just a few teaspoons of moisture. Tilt the dishwasher forward on its rear feet about 15-20 degrees. If you have a partner, have them tilt while you put a shallow tray under the kick plate area. Water in the drain pan will pour out into the tray.

If you see a cup or more, you have a real leak somewhere and need to find it before reusing the dishwasher. If you see a few tablespoons or less, especially if it’s clear water with no soap smell, you almost certainly have condensation buildup not a leak.

In South Florida, here’s the typical condensation scenario: the dishwasher sits in a kitchen with ambient humidity at 60-70%. During the heat-dry phase, hot moist air vents out the side of the door. When the cycle ends, the warm tub cools faster than the moist air around it. Moisture condenses on the underside of the tub and drips into the drain pan. Over weeks, enough accumulates to trip the float.

We see this most often in homes where the kitchen AC isn’t aggressive (Coconut Grove ground-floor apartments, Brickell units with central air set to 78 for energy savings, older Coral Gables homes with retrofit AC). Coastal homes are also affected because of the higher baseline humidity.

Resetting the Dishwasher After You Drain the Pan

Once you’ve drained the drain pan (or determined it was dry to begin with and the error is a false trip), you need to reset the dishwasher. The control board doesn’t automatically clear E15 even after the float drops.

Procedure:

  1. Open the door fully
  2. Press and hold Start for 3-5 seconds until the cycle indicator clears
  3. Close the door, wait 5 seconds, open again
  4. If the display still shows E15, unplug the dishwasher at the outlet under the sink for 60 seconds
  5. Plug back in, the unit should boot clean

If after a power cycle the E15 returns immediately within 30 seconds of restart, there’s water still in the pan or the float is mechanically stuck up. If it returns after running a full cycle, you have an active leak that needs to be found.

Finding the Actual Leak

If E15 returns after every cycle, here’s the order to check the likely sources, easiest first:

Detergent dispenser door seal: The dispenser door is held in by a gasket that fails after 5-8 years. Run a cycle with the front panel removed (you can pop the inner door panel by removing the Torx screws around the perimeter). Watch the dispenser area during the wash cycle. Water leaking around the dispenser drips down inside the door, then onto the floor of the tub, then through the drain pan vent.

Door gasket: The main door gasket runs around the tub opening. Inspect the full perimeter for cracks, gaps, or food debris embedded in the rubber. Replacement is Bosch 00754874 ($35-50). A leaking door gasket usually shows water dripping from under the door corners during the cycle.

Spray arm seal at base: The lower spray arm sits on a bearing post. The seal at the post base (Bosch 00611474, $8-15) can fail and leak slowly. You’d see water dripping into the drain pan during wash phases.

Drain hose connections: Under the sink, where the dishwasher drain hose connects to the disposal or air gap. Tighten the hose clamp or replace if cracked. A backflow event from the disposal can also push water into the pan via the drain.

Inlet valve / water inlet: The water inlet valve (Bosch 00643696) leaks at the body sometimes after long use. Check the back-left corner of the dishwasher base for moisture. This is a tech-level diagnosis because you have to pull the unit out.

Sump or pump housing crack: Rare but happens. The sump is at the bottom of the tub. A crack in the sump or pump housing dumps water directly into the drain pan during cycles. Visible only with the unit pulled out.

Why Condensation E15 Happens in Florida Especially

The Aqua-Stop system was engineered in Germany where ambient humidity averages 40-50%. In Miami where summer interior humidity routinely hits 60% even with AC running, the system gets false trips that European homeowners almost never see.

If you’re getting E15 once every 3-6 months without any other symptoms (no visible leak, no detergent smell, no water on the floor), the diagnosis is probably accumulated condensation. The fix isn’t repair, it’s housekeeping. Once or twice a year:

  1. Pull the kick plate (4-6 screws, takes 5 minutes)
  2. Reach in with a hand towel and absorb any water from the drain pan
  3. Wipe out the pan completely
  4. Reinstall the kick plate

Doing this proactively every 6 months in South Florida prevents most condensation-related E15 calls. It’s a 10-minute job.

When the Float Itself Is Bad

Sometimes the float gets gummed up with grease or food residue that wicked through a small leak. The float doesn’t rise and fall smoothly, it stays stuck up, and the dishwasher reports E15 even with a dry pan.

If you drain the pan, clean it thoroughly, and the error persists, manually press the foam float down with your finger. You should feel a soft springy resistance and the float should drop freely. If it’s sticky or stays up, the microswitch assembly (Bosch 00611916 or similar by model) needs replacement. About $30-45 in parts.

You can also test the microswitch with a multimeter. With the float fully down, the switch should read continuity in normal position. Push the float up, switch should open (no continuity). If the switch reads stuck either way, replace it.

Bosch 300, 500, 800 Series Differences

The Aqua-Stop hardware is similar across the Bosch 300, 500, and 800 series, but the part numbers vary by model year and chassis. The diagnosis approach is identical. The 800 series (SHPM88, SHEM78, SHV88, SHX88 models) tends to be the most sensitive because they have the most efficient heat-dry and therefore the most condensation potential.

If you have a Bosch Benchmark series (SHV88, SHX88 with the highest trim) the procedure is the same but the bottom kick plate has more retention and may need a partial side-panel removal to access the drain pan cleanly.

When to Call

Call a tech if:

  • E15 returns within minutes of a clean reset and you can’t find a visible leak
  • You’ve drained the pan twice and it refills within a cycle
  • The float seems mechanically jammed
  • Water appears on the floor in front of the dishwasher (visible leak, not just pan trip)
  • The error is paired with E18, E20, or E27 codes (compounded faults)

Berne Appliance Repair covers Bosch and most other major brands across Miami-Dade and Broward. We see E15 calls 2-3 times a week during summer, almost all of them resolvable in one visit. $59 service call, waived on repair.
