You reach for the milk before work and notice the carton feels lukewarm. The lettuce in the crisper looks wilted. But when you open the freezer next to it, the ice cubes are rock-solid and the frozen peas are still frozen. That split behavior, where the freezer keeps doing its job while the fridge section creeps into the danger zone, is one of the most common service calls we get in South Florida, especially once the May humidity rolls in and compressors start running harder.

This problem almost never means your refrigerator is dead. In nine out of ten cases, it’s one of three or four specific parts, and most of them are diagnosable in under twenty minutes if you know where to look.

How Cold Air Actually Reaches the Fridge Section

On a side-by-side or French-door unit (think Whirlpool WRF555SDFZ, GE GSS25, Samsung RF28), the only place cold air is generated is the freezer evaporator coil. A small fan, called the evaporator fan, blows that chilled air through a duct into the fresh-food compartment. A damper, usually a small motorized flap behind the back wall of the fridge, opens and closes to regulate how much cold air gets through.

If the freezer is freezing but the fridge is warm, cold air is being made. It just isn’t being moved. That single fact narrows the suspect list dramatically.

Sub-Zero built-ins are a slight exception. The 600 and 700 series use two separate sealed systems, one per compartment, so a “freezer cold, fridge warm” symptom on a Sub-Zero usually points at the fridge-side compressor or condenser fan, not the airflow path. We see that come up on calls in Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles homes pretty regularly.

The Evaporator Fan Motor (The Number One Cause)

Open the freezer and listen. With the door switch held in (or taped down), you should hear a steady whoosh of air from the back wall. No sound, or a slow grinding noise, points straight at the evaporator fan motor.

These motors run continuously when the compressor is on. They fail in two ways. The bearings dry out and seize, or the motor windings open up and it stops turning entirely. On Whirlpool and KitchenAid units, the part to look at is the W10822259 series motor. On LG French-door models like the LFXS28968S, it’s the EAU60783818. Both are accessible from inside the freezer once you pull the back panel.

A quick test: spin the fan blade by hand with the fridge unplugged. If it’s stiff, notchy, or makes a scraping sound against the housing, the motor is done. A new evaporator fan motor runs $80 to $150 in parts, depending on brand, and takes about 30 to 45 minutes to swap.

Frozen Evaporator Coil (The Defrost System)

If the fan is running fine but the fridge is still warm, pull the freezer back panel and look at the coil itself. Is it a solid block of frost, top to bottom? That means cold air can’t pass through, even though the fan is trying. The freezer stays cold because the ice itself is cold, but the fridge starves.

A frozen-over coil means the defrost cycle has failed. Three parts share the blame:

  • Defrost heater — a thin resistive element wrapped through the coil. Tests at 20-50 ohms when good, open when bad.
  • Defrost thermostat (also called the bimetal) — closes at around 15 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit to allow the heater to fire.
  • Defrost timer or control board — tells the system when to defrost. On modern Bosch and GE units this is integrated into the main board.

To confirm which one, manually advance the defrost timer (older models with a mechanical timer) or force a defrost via diagnostic mode (Samsung holds top-left buttons for 8 seconds; LG has a service mode reachable from the dispenser pad). If the heater glows, the thermostat passed. If nothing happens, you’ve got an electrical fault somewhere in that string.

The Damper Door

Some homeowners try every defrost test and find nothing wrong, only to discover the damper itself is stuck shut. The damper is a small plastic flap, motorized on newer fridges, that physically blocks air from entering the fridge section. If a piece of food slid behind the back wall or the motor seized up, cold air has nowhere to go.

Pop off the back panel of the fresh-food side and look for the damper assembly. Try opening it manually with the fridge running. If air rushes in immediately, the flap was the entire problem. Damper motors on Whirlpool and Maytag units (part W10861225 and similar) run about $60 retail.

Iced-Over Drain Line and Why It Matters

Here is something most homeowners miss. When the defrost cycle runs correctly, the melted water drips into a small trough at the back of the freezer floor, then runs down a drain tube to a pan under the unit. If that drain tube freezes shut, water backs up, refreezes on the coil, and the whole cycle goes downhill within a week.

You can clear it with a turkey baster full of hot water poured straight down the drain hole. If you live in Miami Beach or Coral Gables where saltwater air corrodes the drain trough metal, this fails more often than the rest of the country. Worth checking even if the visible coil looks fine.

When the Compressor or Sealed System Is the Real Culprit

A weak compressor can cool the freezer but not pull the temperature down enough to reach the fridge through the damper. You’ll hear it running constantly, the back of the unit will be hot to the touch (above 130 F is a red flag), and the freezer might creep up to 15 or 20 F instead of holding zero.

Refrigerant leaks behave similarly. A partial loss of charge will keep some cooling capacity but not enough for the whole cabinet. If you spot oily residue on the copper lines or hear a faint hissing near the compressor, that’s a sealed-system call. EPA Section 608 certification is required to recharge it legally, so it’s not a DIY repair. Berne Appliance Repair technicians carry the cert and the equipment.

What to Do Before You Call

Two free things that buy time and help diagnosis:

  1. Pull the fridge out and vacuum the condenser coils underneath or on the back. Six months of dust in a Florida house traps heat against the compressor, and it can mimic a refrigerant problem.
  2. Empty the fridge section and set the dial one number colder. If it recovers in 12 hours, you might just have a thermistor or control board drift, which is a cheaper fix than mechanical.

If neither helps, the food’s at risk and it’s time to bring someone out. Berne Appliance Repair runs same-day service windows across Miami-Dade and Broward, $59 service call (waived if you proceed with the repair), and our techs are factory-trained on Sub-Zero, Whirlpool, GE, LG, Bosch, and KitchenAid. Call (754) 345-4515 or book online through our refrigerator repair page. Aventura, Sunny Isles, Bal Harbour, and Hollywood are usually same-afternoon slots even in summer. For Aventura-specific service, head to our refrigerator repair in Aventura page.

Don’t wait three days hoping it’ll fix itself. Once the inside of a fridge sits above 40 F for more than four hours, you’re looking at food loss that costs more than the repair would have.
