The 50% Rule for Appliance Repair Was Written by Retailers. Here Is the Number We Use
Same-day appliance repair from a local team — 19 factory-trained technicians, 4.8★ across 1,217 customer reviews. The $59 service call is free if you proceed with the repair, and every job is backed by a parts warranty up to 10 years plus a 90-day labor warranty.
Request service
The rule that a repair costing more than half a new unit’s price means replace comes from appliance retailers, not from repair economics, and it uses the wrong number on both sides. It compares a repair quote against a store’s sticker price, skipping tax, delivery, installation and haul-away, while ignoring that the repair typically restores five to eight more years of service on a machine already several years into a 15-to-25-year lifespan. Run the comparison against the real, installed replacement cost and most repairs that fail the 50 percent test pass easily at 15 to 25 percent.
Where the rule came from
Big-box appliance retailers and some extended-warranty programs use the 50 percent line because it is simple to apply at a sales counter and it steers undecided customers toward a purchase. A salesperson does not know your repair quote’s actual number, so a flat percentage rule gives a fast answer that happens to favor a sale. It is not a rule any repair technician uses, because a technician is looking at a specific part, a specific failure, and a specific number, not a percentage shortcut.
The two numbers the rule gets wrong
First, the “50 percent” side of the equation. A repair quote from a technician already includes labor and the part; there is nothing hidden in it. The replacement side of the comparison almost never gets the same treatment. Sticker price for a new mid-range refrigerator might read $1,800, but by the time Florida’s 7 percent sales tax, a $100 to $250 delivery and installation fee, and a $40 to $100 haul-away charge for the old unit are added, the real cost is $2,050 to $2,300, twelve to twenty-eight percent higher than the number the 50 percent rule was measured against.
Second, the rule treats every year of an appliance’s life as equal, when it is not. A $300 repair on a refrigerator that is three years into a 20-year expected life is a completely different value proposition than the same $300 repair on a unit already at year 19. The 50 percent rule cannot tell those two situations apart because it only looks at one ratio, repair cost against replacement cost, with no term for how much life is left either way.
A Doral case
A 2019 KitchenAid French-door refrigerator in Doral needed a $780 sealed-system repair, refrigerant leak and compressor, at six years old. By the 50 percent rule against a $2,600 sticker price for a comparable new unit, $780 sits at 30 percent, already a pass. But the homeowner had first been quoted against a discount retailer’s $1,500 base model, which put the repair at 52 percent, technically failing the rule and pushing toward a downgrade purchase. The real installed cost of a comparable French-door replacement, not a downgrade, ran $2,850 with tax and delivery. Against that number the $780 repair sat at 27 percent, a clear repair decision once the right comparison was used.
A better math: cost per year of service
| Scenario | 50% rule verdict | Cost per year, repair path | Cost per year, replace path |
|---|---|---|---|
| $300 repair, unit 3 yrs old, 20-yr lifespan, 17 yrs left | Pass (repair) | $18/year | N/A, no need to replace |
| $780 repair, unit 6 yrs old, 20-yr lifespan, 14 yrs left | Fails against low-end retail price | $56/year | $204/year (new unit over its own 14-yr window) |
| $1,050 sealed-system repair, unit 19 yrs old | Fails, correctly | $210-350/year (2-5 yrs left) | $115-150/year (new unit, 18-20 yr life) |
When the 50 percent instinct is actually right
The rule is not always wrong, it is just measuring the wrong things. A repair that genuinely does approach half the real installed replacement cost, and that happens on old units with sealed-system failures or control boards no longer stocked, usually does point toward replacement, because so little service life remains that the cost-per-year math tips the same direction the crude percentage does. The rule gets the right answer by accident in those cases and the wrong answer everywhere else, which is most cases, because it never asked how many years of use the repair buys back.
