Leaks first, then noise
Most Tampa washers we see are not dead. They leak, they bang, or they stop with a tub full of water. Leaks were the top complaint in our Tampa washer records last year, ahead of banging and shaking, washers that would not spin, and machines that would not fill.
Where the water shows up tells you a lot. A puddle at the front of a front-loader is usually the door boot (the rubber gasket) or a pump filter that is clogged and seeping. Water under a top-loader is more often a fill hose, a cracked pump housing or the tub seal. A leak only during the drain points at the drain hose or the standpipe in the wall, not the washer at all.
Banging during spin is usually an unbalanced load the first time and worn suspension the second. On top-loaders, worn suspension rods let the tub hit the cabinet. On front-loaders, worn shock absorbers or a failing drum bearing make the noise, and a bearing that grinds like a jet engine on spin is a bigger job than a set of shocks.
Before you call
- Front-loader full of water? Most have a small door at the bottom front with a pump filter. Put towels down and a shallow pan under it before you open it. Socks, coins and hair ties stop more pumps than broken motors do.
- Washer will not start? Check the door or lid lock light. A latch that does not register stops everything, and that is a smaller repair than a control board.
- Error code on the display? Write it down exactly, along with the model number from the tag inside the door or on the back of the lid. Samsung, LG and GE codes narrow the diagnosis before the technician arrives.
- Washer in the garage? Check that the floor is level and that the machine has not walked off its spot. Garage slabs in Tampa often slope toward the door, and a washer that rocks on one corner will bang no matter what part is new.
