Most laundry in Brickell, Sunny Isles, Aventura and the Fort Lauderdale beach towers is stacked in a closet the width of the machine, and that changes the repair before the technician touches a part. A dryer on top of a washer has to come down to reach the washer’s pump, the washer has to come out to reach the dryer’s vent, and the closet gives you four inches of clearance to do it in. We do it daily. This page covers the three kinds of stacked laundry we see, what fails in each, and what the closet adds to the job.

What fails, and what the stack adds

Washer will not drain or spin (stacked pair)

The same drain pump, filter, door lock or shifter actuator as any washer, reached by unstacking the dryer. We bring the stacking kit hardware, lift the dryer off, repair, and restack with the brackets seated so it does not walk. Same-visit on the common platforms.

Dryer not heating on a stack

Thermal fuse, element or igniter, and behind them a vent that runs thirty feet through the ceiling. On a stack the vent connection is behind and above the washer; we pull the pair forward, fix the part, clean the vent and measure the airflow. See dryer vent cleaning for the vent side.

Laundry center: washer agitates, will not spin

On GE GUD and Whirlpool WET centers the washer half is a standard top loader: lid lock, mode shifter or actuator, motor coupler on older units. Reached through the front and the lower back, without separating the cabinet.

Laundry center: dryer squeals or will not turn

Rollers, idler, belt or motor in the upper half. Access is from the front on most centers. Same parts as the standalone dryer of the same brand, same prices.

WashTower: one half dead, the other fine

The tower is two machines on one control. A dead dryer half with a working washer is the dryer’s board or heater; a dead washer half is the washer’s. The tower cannot be split for replacement, which makes repair the answer at nearly any age.

Ventless combo takes hours, water in the tray

The condenser coil is packed with lint, or the condensate pump has failed. Cleaning is maintenance; the pump is a part. All-in-one combos are the hardest-working machines in the closet and need the coil cleaned yearly.

Stack rocks, walks, or bangs against the closet

A stacking kit that was never installed, installed wrong, or lost a bracket. Or the washer’s shocks have gone and the whole tower shakes. We reseat the kit and replace the shocks; a bare dryer sitting on a washer is a hazard we fix before anything else.

Leak somewhere in the stack, floor wet

A washer boot, a drain hose crushed behind the pair, or a condensate line on a ventless unit. We find it with the pair pulled forward and water running, which in a closet means the technician does it, not a guess from the puddle.

Repair or replace a stack

A stacked pair is repaired one half at a time, and the half that is fine argues for fixing the other. A laundry center is one cabinet, so a repair to either half is almost always cheaper than replacing both. A WashTower cannot be split at all. The one case we quote a replacement is a drum bearing on a washer past eight years under a healthy dryer, where we give you the price of a new matching washer and the price of the bearing and let you decide.

Repair, almost always. The parts are standard top loader and dryer parts, $120 to $410, and replacing means both halves at once. We only quote a new center when the washer transmission and the dryer motor fail in the same year.

Can you fix one half of an LG WashTower?

Yes. The tower is two machines on one control, and each half has its own parts. It cannot be split for replacement, so repair is the answer at nearly any age.

My ventless washer-dryer combo takes four hours to dry. Is it broken?

Usually the condenser coil is packed with lint or the condensate pump has failed. Cleaning and a pump test run $140 to $280, and the coil needs it yearly.
