GE washers are simpler inside than an LG or a Samsung, and that is their strength. A GTW top-loader has a motor, a mode shifter, a lid lock, a pump and four suspension rods, and when it stops working it is one of those five. The front-load GFW line is newer and closer to the competition in design, with the UltraFresh vent system that finally solved the mildew smell most front-loaders develop in Miami humidity. Since Haier took over GE Appliances in 2016 the parts pipeline has stayed reliable and the prices moderate, which is why a GE washer is usually worth repairing well past the age where we would quote a replacement for other brands.

GE washer problems and what we do about them
Top-loader fills and agitates but will not spin
The lid lock or the mode shifter. GE’s mode shifter sits under the tub and moves the drive between agitate and spin; when its small motor or its position sensor fails, the machine agitates and then sits there. Both are same-visit parts on GTW machines. On the older Hydrowave models the same symptom is the motor inverter board.
Walks, bangs or stops with an unbalance error on spin
Four suspension rods hold the tub on every GE top-loader, and they sag after five or six years. We replace all four together. One new rod and three old ones puts the tub off-center and the code returns in a month.
Will not drain, clothes soaking wet
The drain pump. GE pumps clog with the same coins and socks as any other brand, and the impeller cracks when something hard gets past the inlet. On GFW front-loaders the pump is behind the lower front panel; on GTW top-loaders it is reached from the back. Same-visit part either way.
Front-loader shakes on spin, roars, water underneath
Shock absorbers if it is a shake, drum bearing and seal if it is a roar with water. The GFW bearing lasts longer than most because the UltraFresh line runs a slower final spin, but it is not immortal. We tell you which one it is before quoting.
Fills slowly, or will not stop filling
Inlet valve screens packed with mineral grit from South Florida water, or a failed valve. Overfilling on a GTW is the water level sensor or a pinched pressure hose. Screens are cleaned free with the visit.
Lid will not lock, cycle will not start
The lid lock assembly, or on some GTW models a lid strike that has worn down. A lid that will not lock also blocks the spin, so the two arrive together. A $150 to $280 repair on every current model.
Dead panel, or lights on but nothing happens
The main control board, or a failed motor inverter on the older Hydrowave platform. We check the incoming power, the lid lock circuit and the motor before condemning a board, because a lock that has failed open makes the board look dead.
Leaking from the bottom
A split pump housing, a loose hose clamp, or on top-loaders the tub seal at the base of the drive. Front-loaders leak at the door boot. We find the source with the panel off and water running.

Repair or replace
Almost everything on a GE top-loader is worth repairing at any age under fifteen years, because the parts are inexpensive and the platform has no single failure that takes the whole machine with it. On the front-loaders the line is a drum bearing past eight years, where the repair reaches half the price of a new GFW550. Stacked GUD laundry centers tip toward repair, since replacing one means replacing the dryer too.
