GE dryers are built around a heating element, a high-limit thermostat, a belt, two drum bearings and a blower, and when one stops working it is one of those. The GE habit we see most is a dryer that heats and then stops heating halfway through the cycle, which is the high-limit thermostat cutting the element because the vent is not moving air. The second habit is the older GE platform with the rear drum bearing and the felt slides that squeal when they wear. Both are cheap repairs. Since Haier took over GE Appliances the parts have stayed available and inexpensive, and a GE dryer is one of the easiest machines in the house to keep running. Here is the list and the numbers.

GE dryer models we repair

  • Electric GTD33, GTD42, GTD45, GTD58, GTD65, GTD72, GTD84 and front-load GFD55, GFD65, GFD85
  • Gas GTX33, GTX42, GTD45G, GTD65G, GTD72G and GFD65G, GFD85G
  • Profile PTD60, PTD70, PTD90 with SmartDry and the UltraFresh GFD85
  • Stacked laundry centers GUD24, GUD27 and the 2-in-1 combo units
  • Compact 24-inch GFT14 ventless and the heat-pump GFT14ESS
  • Older DBXR, DPSR, DDE, DVL and DHDSR platforms with the rear bearing

GE dryer problems and what we do about them

Runs but no heat
Electric: the heating element has opened, or the thermal fuse and high-limit thermostat on the heater housing have gone. Gas: the igniter, the flame sensor or the gas valve coils, in that order. We meter each and check the vent airflow before leaving, because the fuse blew for a reason and the reason is still in the duct.
Heats, then goes cold halfway, clothes take two cycles
The high-limit thermostat is cycling the element because the dryer is overheating, and it is overheating because the vent is blocked or the blower housing is packed with lint. We clean the vent to the outside where the run allows and clear the housing. A gas GE doing this has a valve coil that quits when warm, a specific and cheap part.
Squeal or thump on every rotation
On the older DBXR and DPSR platform it is the rear drum bearing and the front felt slides; on current GTD units the drum rollers or the idler pulley. We replace the bearing kit, or the rollers, pulley and belt as a set, with the drum out.
E60, E61, E70, E71: heating and sensor codes on Profile and UltraFresh
E60 and E61 are the heater circuit, E70 and E71 the thermistor and the moisture sensor. Each code points to one part. The sensors are cheap; the board is not, and we only quote it after the sensors test good.
Will not start, hums, or drum does not turn
A snapped belt if it hums, a failed belt switch, or the drive motor. Belts are truck stock on every GE platform; motors are a same-day part on the common GTD and DBXR models.
Dead panel, no lights
A failed door switch, a blown thermal fuse on the older mechanical-timer models, or the control board on the electronic ones. We check the switch and the fuse before condemning a board.
Stops when you let go of the door, or door will not latch
A worn door catch or a failed door switch. Ten-minute parts.
Sensor dry ends early, clothes damp
Moisture sensor bars inside the drum coated with dryer-sheet residue, or a failed sensor harness. Cleaning the bars is part of the visit.

Repair or replace

A GE dryer is worth repairing at nearly any age. The parts that fail cost a fraction of the machine, they are still made for the older platforms, and the cabinet and drum last. The only case where we quote a new dryer is a motor and a board failing in the same year on a unit past twelve years, and a stacked GUD laundry center tips back toward repair because the washer half is fine.

Frequently asked questions

Do you repair GE dryers in Miami and Broward?
Yes, across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, seven days a week, electric and gas, Profile, UltraFresh, stacked GUD units and the older DBXR platform. Same-day slots most days when you call before noon at (754) 345-4515.
Why does my GE dryer run but not heat?
Electric: the heating element or the thermal fuse, $120 to $310. Gas: the igniter, flame sensor or valve coils, $150 to $290. The vent is checked in every heating repair, because a blocked vent is what blew the fuse.
My GE dryer heats and then goes cold halfway through. What is that?
Overheating: the high-limit thermostat cuts the element because the vent is blocked or the blower is packed with lint. Vent cleaning runs $140 to $320. On gas dryers a valve coil that quits when warm gives the same symptom, $150 to $290.
How much does it cost to fix a squealing GE dryer?
$200 to $360 for the rear bearing kit and felt slides on the older platform, or $220 to $380 for rollers, pulley and belt on current GTD models, replaced together with the drum out.
Is a 15-year-old GE dryer worth repairing?
Usually yes. The bearing kit, element and belt are still made, cheap and on the truck. We only quote a new dryer when the motor and the board fail together.
Do you repair GE stacked washer-dryer units?
Yes. GUD24 and GUD27 laundry centers use the standard GE dryer parts in the upper half, and we service them in place without moving the unit out of the closet.
