Washer Not Spinning: Lid Lock, Actuator, Coupler, Belt or Motor

The washer filled, it agitated or tumbled, it drained, and the clothes are soaking wet at the end. Or it did not drain, and the clothes are sitting in water. Those are two different problems and the first thing we do on the truck is tell them apart, because a washer will not spin with water in the tub no matter what else is wrong. Here is the order we check, by platform, and what each fix costs in South Florida.

First: did it drain?

Every washer refuses to spin until the water level drops. If there is water in the tub, the problem is the drain, not the spin: a clogged pump filter, a coin in the pump, a kinked hose, or a failed drain pump. Clear the filter behind the small lower door on a front-loader, check the hose behind the machine, and if the code is 5C, OE, F21 or E18 you are in drain territory. $120 to $320, and it is covered in detail on the washer will not drain page. Top-loaders: lid lock and shifter actuator

On Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore and Amana top-loaders built since 2010, and on GE GTW machines, the drive has to shift from agitate to spin. A small motor under the tub, the shifter actuator on Whirlpool and the mode shifter on GE, does the shifting. When it fails the washer agitates, drains, and then sits there or hums. It is the single most replaced washer part in our trucks and a same-visit repair, $160 to $300.

The lid lock is the other half. The control will not spin with a lid it reads as unlocked, and a failed lock or a worn lid strike gives the same symptom, often with a blinking lid lock light. $150 to $290. On Samsung and LG top-loaders the lid switch does the same job.

Older direct-drive top-loaders: the motor coupler

Whirlpool and Kenmore top-loaders from before 2010 connect the motor to the transmission with a small plastic and rubber coupler. It is designed to break before the transmission does, and after fifteen years it does. The washer hums or agitates weakly and never spins. A $15 part and an hour of labor, $130 to $210, and the machine usually outlives its replacement.

Front-loaders: the door lock

A front-loader will not spin with a door it does not read as locked. The lock fails, or a swollen door boot holds the door a hair open, and the cycle ends with wet clothes and a dE, F5 E2 or E16 code. $180 to $340. If the door is stuck locked with water inside, we drain through the pump filter first.

Any platform: the belt or the motor

Belt-drive machines snap the belt, and the motor spins free with no drum movement: a hum and nothing else. $140 to $250. Direct-drive LG and Samsung machines have no belt; when the motor cannot find its position, LG shows LE and Samsung shows 3E, and the part is the hall sensor on the motor, $170 to $300. The motor itself is under a ten-year part warranty on most LG, Samsung and Maytag machines, so a true motor failure is often labor only.

Any platform: the machine refuses to spin an unbalanced load

Modern washers measure the wobble before the final spin and refuse to spin up if it is too much. A single comforter, a bath mat, or a load of towels wrapped around one side will do it, and the machine keeps adding time or stops with UE, UC or an unbalanced message. Redistribute the load. If it happens on every load, the suspension rods on a top-loader or the shock absorbers on a front-loader have sagged, $200 to $380 as a set.

Rarely: the control board

A board that has lost its program can refuse to spin, but it is the last thing we test, because a lock that failed open, a sensor that is misreading, or an actuator that is stuck produces the same behavior for a fraction of the price. Board replacement runs $240 to $480 and we only quote it after everything cheaper has tested good.

What you can check

• Is there water in the tub? Then it is the drain.
• Is the lid or door fully closed and does the lock click? Try a different load size.
• Does it hum with no drum movement? Belt or coupler.
• Is the code UE, UC, or an unbalance message? Split the load and retry.
• Unplug for two minutes. If it spins once and then fails again, it is a part.
