Whirlpool builds the washer most South Florida homes still own, and it also builds them under the Maytag, Amana, Kenmore and Roper names, so the same parts and the same failures show up across five badges. The top-loaders divide into two eras with nothing in common inside: the belt-drive VMW platform sold since 2010, and the direct-drive machines before it with the motor coupler everyone has heard about. The front-loaders are the Duet line and its WFW successors. Knowing which one is in your laundry room decides what the technician brings, which is why dispatch asks for the model tag under the lid.

Whirlpool washer problems, sorted by platform

Top-loader fills, agitates, then will not spin or drain
On VMW and Cabrio machines this is the lid lock switch or the shifter actuator, the small motor-driven part under the tub that shifts between agitate and spin. The actuator is the single most replaced Whirlpool part in our trucks and a same-visit repair. On the older direct-drive machines the same symptom is the motor coupler, a $15 plastic part that takes an hour to reach.
Loud grinding in agitate, oil spot under the machine
The gearcase, or transmission, on a VMW or Cabrio top-loader. The lower bearing fails, the seal goes, and gear oil ends up on the floor. A new gearcase is a solid repair on a machine under eight years old; past that we quote a replacement washer beside it, honestly.
Front-loader shakes violently on spin, banging inside
Shock absorbers on Duet and WFW models, which lose their damping after six or seven years. If the noise is a roar rather than a bang and there is water underneath, it is the drum bearing and tub seal instead, which is a bigger job.
F21, F9 E1, F02: long drain or will not drain
A blocked drain pump on the front-loaders. Coins, bra wires and socks collect at the pump inlet behind the lower front panel. Clearing it is the whole repair a third of the time; when the pump motor has failed, replacement is a same-visit part.
F5 E3, F5 E2, dL: lid or door lock
Lid lock on top-loaders, door lock assembly on front-loaders. A lid that will not lock also stops the spin, so the two symptoms arrive together. Same-visit part on every current Whirlpool platform.
F7 E1, F7 E5: motor or drive fault
On VMW top-loaders this is the drive motor, its capacitor or the rotor position sensor; on Cabrio direct-drive it is the rotor or stator. We meter the windings and the sensor before condemning a motor, because a $30 capacitor produces the same code.
Will not fill, or fills forever
Inlet valve screens clogged with mineral grit from Miami water, or a failed inlet valve. On top-loaders a stuck water level pressure switch or a pinched pressure hose makes the machine fill past the line and drain it back out. Screens are cleaned free with the visit.
Leaking from the bottom
Tub seal on a top-loader with the gearcase symptoms above, drain pump housing or an internal hose on a front-loader, and on Duet machines the door boot at the fold. We find it with the panel off and water running, not by guessing.

Actuators, locks, pumps, valves, couplers, shocks and boards are worth doing on any Whirlpool washer under twelve years old, and the parts are cheap enough that a fifteen-year-old direct-drive machine with a new coupler often outlives its replacement. The line is a gearcase on a top-loader past eight years or a drum bearing on a front-loader past the same age, where the repair reaches half the price of a new WTW5000 or WFW5620.
