Maytag has been a Whirlpool brand since 2006, and a Maytag washer built after that shares its drive, its pump and its control with the Whirlpool machine one shelf over. What is different is the customer. Maytag buyers chose the badge for the ten-year limited part warranty on the motor and the drum, and they expect the machine to be repaired, not replaced. We agree. A Bravos or a Centennial that stopped spinning is usually a $200 repair, and the part behind it is the same one we carry for Whirlpool. The one place the platform changes is the older direct-drive Maytags with the motor coupler, and the Maytag Neptune front-loaders from before the merger, which are their own story.

Maytag washer problems, by code and symptom
Fills and agitates, then will not spin or drain
On MVW and Bravos machines this is the shifter actuator, the small motor under the tub that moves the drive between wash and spin, or the lid lock that refuses to let it. Both are same-visit parts. On a Commercial Grade MVWP with the agitator, the same symptom is the same actuator, because the drive is shared.
F7 E1 or F7 E5: motor or drive fault
The drive motor, its capacitor, or the rotor position sensor on top-loaders. We meter the windings and the sensor first, because a $30 capacitor throws the same code as a $250 motor. The motor is inside Maytag’s ten-year limited part warranty on most models sold since 2015, so check the serial before paying for one.
Loud grinding in agitate, oil under the machine
The gearcase. Its lower bearing fails, the seal goes, and gear oil ends up on the floor. A new gearcase is a solid repair under eight years, and on a Commercial Grade Maytag it is usually worth doing later than that, because the rest of the machine is built to outlast it.
Out of balance on every load, walks across the floor
Suspension rods on top-loaders, replaced as a set of four. Shock absorbers on the MHW front-loaders. Bravos XL units with the large impeller plate are especially sensitive to a single sagged rod. We wrote a longer piece on this at

F9 E1 or F21: long drain
A blocked drain pump, or a failed one. On front-loaders the pump inlet behind the lower panel collects coins and socks; on top-loaders the pump is reached from the back. Clearing is the whole repair a third of the time.
F5 E2 or F5 E3: lid or door lock
Lid lock on top-loaders, door lock on MHW. A lid that will not lock stops the spin too, so the two symptoms arrive together. Same-visit part.
Will not fill, or fills past the line
Inlet screens packed with mineral grit from South Florida water, a failed inlet valve, or on top-loaders a stuck pressure switch. Screens are cleaned free with the visit.
Neptune front-loader with a burning smell or a dead panel
The pre-2006 Neptune is known for a wax motor and a control board that fail together and take the door lock with them. Parts are still available. We tell you honestly when a twenty-year-old Neptune has reached the point where the board plus the lock cost more than the machine is worth.

The Maytag ten-year warranty, in plain terms
Most Maytag washers sold since 2015 carry a ten-year limited warranty on the drive motor and the stainless drum, parts only, and one year on everything else. A dead motor at year six is a labor bill, not a parts bill, if the serial number checks out. Keep the receipt or give us the serial and we look up the build date. The gearcase, the actuator and the pump are not covered, which is why those are the numbers in the table above.
Repair or replace
Actuators, locks, pumps, valves, rods, shocks and boards are worth doing on any Maytag under twelve years, and a Commercial Grade MVWP is worth repairing well past that. The line is a gearcase on a standard top-loader past eight years, or a drum bearing on an MHW past the same age, where the repair reaches half the price of a new MVW5430. Is my Maytag washer motor still under warranty?
On most models sold since 2015 the drive motor and the drum carry a ten-year limited part warranty. If the serial checks out, a motor job is labor only. We look up the build date from the serial if the receipt is gone.
Why does my Maytag Bravos shake and stop with an unbalanced load?
Sagged suspension rods, replaced as a set of four for $200 to $340. The Bravos XL impeller plate is sensitive to a single bad rod, so replacing one does not hold.
There is oil under my Maytag washer and it grinds. Worth fixing?
