Most GE microwaves we repair are built in: over the range with the vent fan, in a wall cabinet, in a combination oven, or as an Advantium that is half oven. A countertop microwave that stops heating is replaced; a built-in GE that stops heating is repaired, because the replacement is a trim kit, a cabinet fit and sometimes an electrician. The failures sort into four groups: the door switches that stop the microwave from running, the high-voltage side that stops it from heating, the control that stops it from responding, and the vent fan and turntable that keep it from being pleasant to use. Here is what each one costs.

GE microwave problems and what they actually are

Runs, light on, turntable turns, food stays cold
The high-voltage side: the magnetron, the high-voltage diode, the capacitor or the transformer. On GE over-the-range units the diode and the magnetron fail most. We discharge the capacitor, meter the diode and the magnetron, and replace what failed. A magnetron on a built-in is worth it; on a basic over-the-range past eight years we quote both numbers.
Dead, no display, no light
The line fuse has blown, usually because a door switch failed out of sequence, or the control board has died. We check the fuse and the door switches before the board, because a $10 fuse and a $20 switch are the answer more often than a board.
Door will not latch, or microwave stops when the door is touched
The door latch hooks are worn or the interlock switches behind them have failed. GE over-the-range doors take years of slamming. Latch and switches together, same visit.
Keypad does not respond, or some keys work
The membrane keypad has failed, often from steam, or a ribbon has loosened. On GE the keypad and control panel come as one assembly on most models. We test before replacing.
Sparking or arcing inside
A damaged waveguide cover, a chipped paint spot on the cavity wall, or a metal fragment. The waveguide cover is a $20 part; a burnt cavity wall on a built-in is a repair with high-temperature paint. We stop the arcing before it burns the magnetron.
Loud hum, buzz or a burning smell while heating
A failing magnetron, a shorted diode or a capacitor on its way out. Stop using it and call; a shorted diode takes the transformer with it if it keeps running.
Turntable will not turn
The turntable motor under the floor, or a coupler that has stripped. A $15 to $40 part on every GE model.
Vent fan runs on its own or will not run (over-the-range)
A fan that starts by itself is the thermostat sensing heat from the range below, which is normal, or a thermostat that has failed closed, which is not. A fan that will not run is the fan motor or the control. Same-visit parts.
Advantium: microwave works, speedcook does not
The halogen lamps or the convection element and their relays. A subsystem specific to Advantium that most shops decline; for us a routine ticket with parts a few days out.

Repair or replace

A built-in GE, an Advantium, a combination wall oven or a microwave drawer is worth repairing at nearly any price on this table, because replacement means a trim kit, a cabinet fit and matching the rest of the kitchen. A basic over-the-range JVM past eight years that needs a magnetron and a control panel together is where we quote a new unit alongside, and installation is part of that number. Countertop units are not worth a service call, and we say so on the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Do you repair GE microwaves in Miami and Broward?
Yes, across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, seven days a week: over-the-range, built-in, Advantium, combination wall ovens and microwave drawers, repaired in place. Same-day slots most days at (754) 345-4515.
My GE microwave runs but does not heat. Is it worth fixing?
On a built-in or over-the-range unit, usually yes. The diode or the magnetron is the cause, $150 to $420, against a replacement that includes a trim kit or an installation. We meter both and quote the part that failed.
My GE over-the-range microwave is completely dead. Is the board gone?
Usually not. A blown line fuse from a door switch that failed out of sequence is the common cause, $120 to $220. We check the fuse and the switches before quoting a board.
Do you repair GE Advantium ovens?
Yes, including the halogen speedcook lamps, the convection element and their relays, which are the parts that fail separately from the microwave side. $220 to $460 for the speedcook side.
Why does my GE microwave spark inside?
A damaged waveguide cover, a chipped spot on the cavity wall or a metal fragment. The cover is a cheap part, $110 to $220 installed. Stop using it until it is fixed, because arcing burns the magnetron.
Do you repair countertop microwaves?
No. A countertop unit costs less than the diagnosis and the part together, and we say so on the phone. Built-in, over-the-range, drawer and Advantium units are what we repair.
