Whirlpool over-the-range microwaves are the ones in most South Florida kitchens built or renovated in the last fifteen years, under the Whirlpool name and as KitchenAid, Maytag and Amana. The low-profile WML55 that fits over a slide-in range is its own platform with its own habits. All of them fail in the same four ways: the door interlock stops the microwave running, the high-voltage side stops it heating, the control stops responding, and the vent fan or turntable stops doing its job. Built-in and over-the-range units are worth repairing because the replacement is an installation; here is what each fix costs.

Whirlpool microwave problems and what they actually are

Runs but does not heat
The magnetron, the high-voltage diode, the capacitor or the transformer. On Whirlpool over-the-range units the diode and magnetron fail most, and on the WMH53521 family the magnetron is a known early failure. We discharge the capacitor, meter the diode and the magnetron, and replace what failed.
Dead, no display
The line fuse has blown, usually because a door switch failed out of sequence, or the control board has died. Fuse and switches first, because they are cheap and common; the board only after they test good.
Door will not latch, or microwave stops when the door is bumped
Worn latch hooks or failed interlock switches. Whirlpool over-the-range doors take years of slamming. Latch and switches together, same visit.
Keypad ignores presses, or some keys work
A membrane keypad damaged by steam, or a loose ribbon. On most Whirlpool models the keypad and control panel come as one assembly. We test before replacing.
F2, F6, F7 or a code on the display
Whirlpool microwaves report a stuck key, a touch panel fault, a door fault or a thermistor fault as F-codes. Each points to one part. Tell dispatch the code.
Sparking or arcing inside
A damaged waveguide cover, a chipped cavity wall, or a metal fragment. The cover is cheap; a burnt spot on the cavity of a built-in is a touch-up. Stop using it until it is fixed.
Loud hum or buzz while heating, burning smell
A magnetron on its way out, a shorted diode or a capacitor. A shorted diode takes the transformer with it if it keeps running, so this is a call, not a wait.
Turntable stopped, or vent fan runs by itself
The turntable motor or coupler is a $15 to $40 part. A vent fan that starts on its own is the thermostat sensing heat from the range below, normal, or one that has failed closed, which is a part. A fan that will not run is the motor or the control.
Combination wall oven: microwave dead, oven works
On WOC and KOCE units the microwave upper has its own high-voltage side and its own door switches, separate from the oven below. We diagnose it as a microwave, in place, without pulling the oven.

Repair or replace

A built-in Whirlpool or KitchenAid, a combination wall oven, or a low-profile unit that fits nothing else is worth repairing at nearly any price on this table. A basic over-the-range WMH past eight years that needs a magnetron and a control panel together is where we quote a new unit alongside, with installation in that number. Countertop microwaves are not worth a service call, and we say so on the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Do you repair Whirlpool microwaves in Miami and Broward?
Yes, across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, seven days a week: over-the-range, low-profile, built-in and combination wall ovens, plus KitchenAid, Maytag and Amana on the same platforms, repaired in place. Same-day slots most days at (754) 345-4515.
My Whirlpool microwave runs but does not heat. What is it?
The high-voltage diode or the magnetron most often, $150 to $420. We discharge the capacitor, meter both, and quote the one that failed. On a built-in it is worth it; on an old basic over-the-range we give both numbers.
My Whirlpool microwave is completely dead. Is the board gone?
Usually a blown line fuse from a door switch that failed out of sequence, $120 to $220. We check the fuse and switches before quoting a board.
Can you fix the microwave in my Whirlpool combination wall oven without pulling the oven?
Yes. The microwave upper has its own high-voltage side and door switches, and we service it in place on WOC and KitchenAid KOCE units.
Why does my over-the-range microwave fan turn on by itself?
A thermostat senses heat from the range below and runs the fan to protect the electronics, which is normal. A fan that runs constantly with the range cold has a thermostat that failed closed, $170 to $320.
Do you repair countertop microwaves?
No. A countertop unit costs less than the diagnosis and the part, and we say so on the phone. Built-in, over-the-range, low-profile and combination units are what we repair.
