Whirlpool has built the same modular ice maker for decades, under its own name and inside Maytag, Amana, Kenmore and KitchenAid refrigerators, and it fails in a known order: the fill valve, then the module’s motor, then the thermostat inside the module. The French door WRF and WRX units added a second design, an ice maker in the fridge door fed by cold air from the freezer, which fails the way the Samsung one does, by frosting over when the duct is blocked or the door seal leaks. Whirlpool ice maker problems and what they actually are
No ice at all, tray empty and dry
Water is not reaching the tray. The fill valve on the back of the fridge has failed or clogged with sediment, the fill tube into the ice maker has frozen, or the water supply at the wall is off. We check the wall, then the tube, then meter the valve. A valve is $170 to $310; a frozen tube is thawed and its cause found.
Tray full of ice, never harvests
The module’s motor or the thermostat inside it. The modular ice maker has a test point under the front cover; we jump it and watch. A module that does not cycle is replaced as a unit, $220 to $400 with labor, and it is the most common Whirlpool ice maker repair.
Small, hollow or crescent-shaped cubes
Low water fill: a filter past its date, a weak fill valve, or the fill tube partly frozen. Filter first because it is the free answer. On French door units the door ice maker also needs the cold-air duct from the freezer clear, or the tray freezes slowly and harvests early.
In-door ice maker frosted over, ice bin wet (WRF, WRX)
The ice compartment in the fridge door is fed by a duct from the freezer and sealed by a gasket around the compartment. When the gasket fails or the duct is blocked, warm fridge air frosts the tray. We replace the gasket, clear the duct, and replace the ice maker if the frost burned out its motor.
Optic sensor ice maker stopped (older side-by-side)
The emitter and receiver boards on either side of the bin tell the ice maker the bin is full. A failed board, or a bin that is not seated, stops production. We test the optics with the diagnostic sequence before replacing anything.
Ice tastes off or smells like the freezer
A filter past its date, or a bin that has absorbed odors. Filter and a bin wash; if the fridge is running warm, the odor is a cooling problem.
Dispenser jammed, ice clumped in the bin
Meltwater refreezing the cubes from a freezer running warm, a door left ajar, or on French door units the compartment gasket. Auger motor or dispenser flap when those have failed.
Ice maker arm up, or switched off after a move

Repair or replace
The ice maker is never a reason to replace a Whirlpool refrigerator. The module is a fraction of the machine, the fill valve less, and the cooling side is unaffected.
