LG French door refrigerators put the ice maker in the fridge door, feed it cold air through a duct from the freezer, and on the newer units add a second Craft Ice maker with its own mold and heater in the freezer drawer. That gives an LG three separate places to fail: the door ice maker and its duct, the Craft Ice maker, and the fill system they share. LG’s control reports most of them as Er codes on the display, which shortens the diagnosis. LG ice maker problems and what they actually are
No ice, tray dry
Water is not reaching the tray: the fill valve has failed or clogged, the fill tube has frozen, or the water supply at the wall is off. Wall first, then the tube, then the valve metered. A valve is $170 to $310.
Er IS or Er It: ice maker sensor or ice maker
LG’s control has lost the ice maker’s sensor or the ice maker is not cycling. The sensor is inside the assembly on most models, so the fix is the ice maker assembly, $260 to $460, a same-visit part from LG stock on the common French door units.
Er 1F or Er IF: ice fan
The small fan that pushes cold air through the duct into the door ice compartment has stopped, iced in or failed. Without it the ice room warms and the tray freezes slowly or not at all. Fan $180 to $320, and the icing behind it is the compartment seal.
Door ice maker frosting over, ice bin wet
Warm fridge air is getting into the ice compartment past its gasket, or the duct from the freezer is blocked. We replace the compartment gasket, clear the duct, test the ice fan, and replace the ice maker if the frost has burned out its motor.
Small, hollow or slow ice
Low water fill from a filter past its date or a weak valve, or an ice room not cold enough because the duct or fan is compromised. Filter first, free with the visit.
Craft Ice not releasing, spheres cracked or stuck
The Craft Ice maker has its own mold, heater and motor. A heater that has failed leaves the spheres stuck; a motor that has failed leaves the mold full. Replaced as an assembly, $280 to $480, with the fill line to it checked at the same time.
Ice tastes off, dispenser jammed, cubes clumped
A filter past its date, a bin absorbing odors, or meltwater refreezing the cubes because the ice room seal has gone. Filter, bin wash, gasket in that order.
Ice maker switched off, or the fridge in demo mode

Repair or replace
The ice maker is never a reason to replace an LG refrigerator. Even a door ice maker plus a Craft Ice assembly together is a fraction of the machine, and the cooling side is unaffected. The only time an ice maker call turns into a replacement conversation is when the freezer is warm because the linear compressor has failed out of warranty, which is a separate diagnosis on the LG refrigerator repair page.
