The most common dishwasher failure we see, a dead circulation pump or a worn wash motor, costs $180 to $260 to repair on most brands. A new mid-range dishwasher installed with tax and haul-away runs $700 to $1,100. That $180 pump is 20 to 25 percent of the $900 machine, and once it is in, the rest of the dishwasher, racks, door latch, control panel, keeps working exactly as it did the day before the pump failed.
A dishwasher is mostly one motor and one pump
Strip away the racks, the tub liner and the control panel and a dishwasher is a water inlet valve, a circulation pump and motor that sprays water through the arms, a drain pump that clears it, and a heating element for drying. That is the whole working mechanism. Every one of those parts fails independently of the others, and every one of them is a stocked, swappable part on nearly every brand sold in the last fifteen years. A control board failure, less common than a pump failure but not rare, is the one repair that runs closer to $300 to $450, still under half the cost of a new unit.
A Boca Raton case
A 2018 Bosch dishwasher in Boca Raton started leaving a puddle at the bottom of the tub after each cycle and dishes came out with standing water pooled in the lower rack cups. The homeowner assumed the unit needed replacing at six years old. The cause was the drain pump, worn bearings letting water bypass the impeller, $95 in parts, $215 installed. A comparable new Bosch dishwasher with installation runs $950 to $1,300 in South Florida. The repair was 17 to 23 percent of that number, and it came with a 90-day labor warranty on top.
Repair cost by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Typical repair |
|---|---|---|
| Water pools at the bottom after cycle | Drain pump, check valve, or clogged drain hose | $150-260 |
| Dishes come out dirty, poor spray | Wash pump/motor, clogged spray arm, worn impeller | $180-320 |
| Won’t fill or fills slowly | Water inlet valve, float switch stuck | $120-220 |
| Won’t dry dishes | Heating element, vent fan, rinse aid dispenser | $140-260 |
| No power, display dead or erratic | Control board, door latch switch | $220-450 |
Why the 50-percent retail rule does not apply here
Appliance stores tell shoppers to replace once a repair passes half the price of a new unit. On a dishwasher, that rule pushed against the store’s own low price point makes almost every meaningful repair, a pump, a board, a motor, look like a bad deal on paper, because entry-level dishwashers retail for $450 to $600. Run the same rule against the true installed cost of a comparable replacement, $700 to $1,300 with tax and install, and a $180 to $320 pump or motor repair sits at 15 to 30 percent, nowhere near the 50 percent line.
Hard water changes the failure timeline
South Florida’s water runs harder than a lot of the country, and mineral buildup inside a dishwasher’s water inlet valve and spray arm jets speeds up two of the five failures in the table above. A valve that sticks partly open from scale, or spray arm holes narrowed by deposits, both show up as the same symptoms as a worn pump: slow fill, weak spray, dishes coming out less than fully clean. A technician checks for scale before quoting a pump or motor replacement, because sometimes the fix is a descaling service at a fraction of a parts-and-labor repair, not a new component at all.
When replacement is the right call
A tub liner that has cracked and is leaking through the cabinet floor is a structural failure, not a parts failure, and it is the one common dishwasher problem that repair does not fix economically. A control board on a discontinued model where the manufacturer no longer stocks the part also forces replacement regardless of the rest of the machine’s condition. Outside those two situations, a dishwasher under 12 years old is almost always worth repairing.
