The Short Answer
After eleven years of South Florida service calls, the dishwashers I get called for least are Bosch, Miele, and the Whirlpool/KitchenAid family — in roughly that order for build quality, but Whirlpool/KitchenAid flips to the top once you factor in cheap, on-the-shelf parts. The ones that fill my schedule are Samsung and LG: great-looking, feature-packed, and the most likely to land on my calendar for a control board or drain pump. Reliability in a dishwasher comes down to two parts — the drain pump and the control board — so the real question is which brand keeps those simple and cheap to fix. Here’s the ranking from the van.
How I Judge Dishwasher Reliability
Two things only: how often a brand shows up in my schedule, and how cheap and available the parts are when it does. A dishwasher is a straightforward machine — a circulation pump, a drain pump, a control board, a heating element or heat pump, a water inlet valve, and some sensors. The brands that keep those parts robust and stock them locally win. Everything else is marketing.
The Ranking (Tech’s View)
1. Bosch — best build, quietest, most consistent.
Bosch earns its reputation. The pumps are durable, the stainless tubs resist the funk that plastic tubs grow down here, and the whole machine is engineered to run quiet for years. When a Bosch does fail it’s usually a drain pump or a control board, and parts are reasonably available. The catch: repairs run a bit pricier than the Whirlpool family, and the cheapest Ascenta-tier units aren’t as bulletproof as the 300/500/800 series. Full support on our Bosch appliance repair page.
2. Miele — the longevity champion (if you can afford it).
Miele tests its dishwashers to a far higher cycle count than the mainstream brands, and it shows — these are the ones I see oldest and still running. The downside is cost: the machine is expensive up front and the parts are expensive when something does go. A great buy if you keep appliances for 15+ years, overkill if you replace every decade.
3. Whirlpool / KitchenAid / Maytag — the smart-money pick.
This is the family I point most South Florida homeowners to. They’re not the quietest or the fanciest, but they’re honest, repairable, and the shared platform means parts are on every local shelf and any tech knows them cold. When one fails, I can almost always fix it same-day and cheaply. KitchenAid is the upscale tier of the same guts — nicer racks and a quieter motor, same repairability. That parts-and-knowledge advantage is why I often rate this family above Bosch in real-world ownership. See our Whirlpool appliance repair page.
4. GE / GE Profile — solid and well-supported.
GE dishwashers are dependable and, like their other appliances, backed by excellent parts availability in our market. The newer Profile units are genuinely good. A safe mainstream choice, a half-step behind the Whirlpool family mostly on parts ubiquity.
5. Samsung / LG — capable but the most repair calls.
Both make beautiful, feature-loaded dishwashers — third racks, fancy spray zones, app control. They clean well out of the box. But they pack in more electronics and more proprietary parts, and they top my repair schedule for this category: drain pump errors, control boards, and leak-sensor faults. Parts can also run pricier and slower to source. Not junk — just the highest lifetime risk on this list. I break the trade-off down in Samsung vs Whirlpool dishwasher.
6. Frigidaire / budget tiers — buy cheap, expect to replace.
The bottom-shelf units are fine as short-term appliances, but they’re not built to be repaired into old age. At their price, replacement usually beats a major repair.
What Actually Fails (Every Brand)
| Part | What you’ll notice | Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Drain pump | Water left in the bottom, drain error | The single most common failure; repairable on most brands |
| Control board | Dead panel, won’t start, ghost cycles | More common on Samsung/LG and heat-stressed units |
| Water inlet valve | Won’t fill, or won’t stop filling | Cheap, common part |
| Heating element / heat pump | Dishes not drying, no hot wash | Brand-dependent; Bosch uses a heat pump, not an element |
| Door latch / gasket | Won’t start, small leaks | Minor, cheap |
| Wash motor / circulation pump | Poor cleaning, noise | Less common; pricier |
Notice the pattern: the drain pump and the control board dominate. A “more reliable brand” mostly means one that builds those tougher and makes them affordable to replace.
Reliability Ranking, Simplified
| Tier | Brands | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Most reliable | Bosch, Miele | Best build; Miele longest-lived, both pricier to fix |
| Smart-money | Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, GE | Honest, repairable, parts everywhere — best real-world value |
| More risk | Samsung, LG | Great features, most board/pump calls |
| Throwaway | Frigidaire budget, off-brands | Replace, don’t repair |
The South Florida Angle
Two things in our climate quietly shape which dishwasher you should buy. First, hard water — most of South Florida runs hard, and scale is rough on inlet valves, heating elements, and spray arms. Brands with stainless tubs (Bosch, Miele, most KitchenAid) shrug off the mineral and food funk that builds up in plastic-tub budget units. Run a dishwasher cleaner monthly and you’ll add years to any brand.
Second, parts availability is reliability in disguise. A machine that’s slightly less durable but has its pump and board on every local shelf can be the better real-world choice, because a same-day fix beats a week waiting on a proprietary part. That’s the biggest reason I lean toward the Whirlpool/KitchenAid family for most homes here — when something does go, you’re back in business fast and cheap.
The Bottom Line From the Van
Want the fewest dishwasher headaches? Buy Bosch if you want the best build and quietest run and don’t mind a slightly pricier repair, Miele if you keep appliances for 15+ years, or the Whirlpool/KitchenAid family if you want the best blend of reliability, repairability, and cheap parts — which is what I tell most South Florida homeowners. Treat Samsung and LG as the feature play with a bit more lifetime risk, and skip bottom-shelf budget units except as disposable machines. Whatever you own, fight the hard water with a monthly cleaner and don’t be surprised when the drain pump is the part that eventually goes — it’s the same story on every brand.
FAQ
Which dishwasher brand lasts the longest?
Miele tests to the highest cycle count and I see them oldest-and-still-running, but they’re expensive to buy and fix. For most people, Bosch (best build) or the Whirlpool/KitchenAid family (best value and parts) are the practical longevity picks.
Are Samsung and LG dishwashers reliable?
They clean well and look great, but they carry more electronics and proprietary parts, so they generate the most repair calls in this category — usually control boards and drain pumps. Reliable enough, just higher lifetime risk and cost.
What part fails most on dishwashers?
The drain pump (water left standing, drain error) and the control board, on every brand. Both are why a budget dishwasher is often replaced rather than repaired.
Is an expensive dishwasher worth it for reliability?
Up to a point. Bosch and Miele build better and run quieter, but a mid-range KitchenAid will outlast a budget unit for far less, and it’s cheaper to fix. Spend for build quality, not for gimmick features.
