A built-in or over-the-range microwave repair runs $120 to $300 in most cases: a magnetron, a door switch, a control board, a turntable motor. A replacement unit of the same brand and size, once you price the trim kit that fills the gap if the new model’s dimensions differ even slightly and the installer who has to pull the old unit and fit the new one into a cut cabinet opening, runs $500 to $1,400 installed. The repair usually wins, and it wins by more once the trim kit and install labor get counted honestly.
Why built-in microwaves cost more to replace than people expect
A countertop microwave is a box you set down and plug in. A built-in or over-the-range unit is bolted into a cabinet cutout sized for that specific model or a narrow range of compatible models, vented through the cabinet above it in most over-the-range installs, and often wired into a dedicated circuit. When the exact model is discontinued, and appliance models turn over every two to four years, the replacement rarely matches the old cutout dimensions precisely. That gap gets covered with a trim kit, $80 to $250 depending on the size mismatch, and the install itself, disconnecting the vent duct, the electrical, and remounting a 60 to 80 pound unit overhead, runs $150 to $350 in labor even when the trim fits cleanly.
A Fort Lauderdale case
A 2017 Whirlpool over-the-range microwave in Fort Lauderdale stopped heating while the display, fan and light kept working normally. The cause was the magnetron, the part that actually generates the heat, $140 in parts, $260 installed. The homeowner had gotten a replacement quote first: a comparable new over-the-range unit ran $420 to $650 depending on wattage and finish, plus a $130 trim kit because the current model’s width no longer matched the original cabinet cutout exactly, plus $220 for a certified installer to handle the vent reconnection and cabinet mounting. Total replacement cost: $770 to $1,000. The repair at $260 was roughly a quarter of that.
Repair cost by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Typical repair |
|---|---|---|
| Runs but no heat | Magnetron, diode, or high-voltage capacitor | $150-320 |
| Won’t start, door light stays on | Door switch (interlock) | $100-190 |
| Sparking inside | Damaged waveguide cover, metal in cavity | $60-140 |
| Display dead or buttons unresponsive | Control board or membrane keypad | $180-320 |
| Turntable doesn’t rotate | Turntable motor or drive coupler | $70-140 |
The interlock switch failure that looks scarier than it is
A microwave with three door interlock switches for safety will often just refuse to start, or start and stop immediately, when one of those switches wears out or the door alignment shifts slightly over years of use. It reads to an owner like the whole unit failed. It is one of the cheapest repairs on the list, $100 to $190, and the rest of the microwave, the magnetron, the control board, the turntable, is unaffected by an interlock switch going bad.
What over-the-range models add to the equation
An over-the-range microwave does double duty as the range hood, pulling smoke and grease through a vent fan into either an exterior duct or a recirculating charcoal filter. When the fan motor or the grease filter housing fails, it is easy to mistake for a bigger appliance problem because it affects both the microwave function and the kitchen’s ventilation at the same time. In practice the fan motor is a $90 to $170 repair, separate from the magnetron and the heating circuit entirely, and a unit can keep microwaving food perfectly while its vent fan needs attention, or vice versa. Charcoal filters, when applicable, are a routine replacement item, not a repair, and swapping one is often enough to fix a “the microwave doesn’t work like it used to” complaint that has nothing to do with heating at all.
When replacement makes more sense
A magnetron failure on a microwave older than 12 to 15 years sometimes coincides with the door seal and hinge wearing out too, and stacking two or three repairs on an old unit can approach replacement cost. A cracked waveguide cover paired with visible arcing damage to the cavity interior, not the cover alone, is a safety call that a technician should make in person, not a repair estimated over the phone. Outside those cases, a built-in microwave under a decade old with a single failed part is a repair, not a replacement, especially once the trim kit and install cost of the alternative are counted.
Run the real numbers, part cost against trim kit and install, on the repair vs. replace cost calculator.
