A gas range built around 2005, standing pilotless ignition, mechanical knobs, heavy cast grates, will very likely outlive a 2025 range with a touch control panel and self-clean cycle that runs the oven cavity to 900 degrees on a regular basis. Igniters, thermocouples and burner valves are $60 to $220 repairs on the old range. Control boards on the new one, the part most likely to fail first, run $300 to $600, and that is before you count the self-clean cycle’s own habit of cooking the control board sitting just above the oven cavity.
Two very different sets of parts wearing out
An older gas range has almost nothing electronic beyond the igniter circuit. Knobs turn mechanical valves directly, the oven thermostat is a bimetallic or capillary sensor, and the whole range keeps working through power outages because none of its core functions need a control board. A newer range or wall oven routes almost everything, burner ignition, oven temperature, even the clock and timer, through a control board that sits close to oven heat and, on self-clean models, gets baked repeatedly at the highest temperature the appliance reaches. That proximity to heat is the single biggest reason newer range control boards fail more than older mechanical ranges ever did.
An Aventura case
A 2007 GE gas range in Aventura would not light on the oven burner, clicking repeatedly without catching. The cause was the oven igniter, a $65 part, $185 installed. The same household had replaced a five-year-old GE range with a digital control panel two years earlier, after its control board failed following a self-clean cycle, a $420 part on top of $150 labor, $570 total, close enough to a new mid-range range that the owner chose to buy new instead of repairing a unit that seemed likely to fail the same board a second time.
Repair cost by type
| Range type | Common failure | Typical repair |
|---|---|---|
| Gas range, mechanical knobs (pre-2012) | Igniter, thermocouple, burner valve | $120-260 |
| Gas range, mechanical knobs | Oven thermostat / temperature sensor | $140-220 |
| Electric range, coil or smooth-top | Element, infinite switch, burner receptacle | $110-240 |
| Any range, digital control (2015+) | Control board | $300-600 |
| Self-clean models | Door lock motor/switch (self-clean cycle failure) | $180-320 |
Why self-clean shortens a range’s life
A self-clean cycle heats the oven cavity to 850-900 degrees for two to four hours, hot enough to burn off baked-on food. It also bakes every wire, sensor and adjacent control component the same way, cycle after cycle, year after year. Older mechanical ranges either lacked self-clean entirely or isolated the control components further from the cavity. Newer ranges pack the electronics closer to the oven for a slimmer design, and self-clean use correlates with earlier control board and door lock failures across the brands we service. None of this means skip self-clean forever; it means expect the control side of a newer range to need attention sooner than the burners do.
Induction and dual-fuel ranges add their own wrinkle
Induction cooktops, newer to most South Florida kitchens, replace the burner and igniter question entirely with a glass ceramic surface and an induction coil driven by a power board. Those boards run $350 to $700 to replace and are the single point of failure for the whole cooking surface, unlike a gas range where one burner can go out while the other three keep working fine. Dual-fuel ranges, gas cooktop over an electric oven, split the risk: the cooktop side stays mechanically simple while the oven side carries the same control board exposure as any electric wall oven. Knowing which category a range falls into changes what a repair quote is likely to run before the technician even opens the panel.
When to replace instead
A cracked oven cavity liner, rare but not unheard of on ranges that saw repeated self-clean cycles for over a decade, is a structural repair that runs close to replacement cost. A control board failure on a range where the manufacturer has discontinued that board, which happens on some 2013-2016 digital models, also forces the decision. A gas leak at the manifold on an old range, distinct from a simple burner valve, needs a safety assessment first; in most cases the manifold itself is still repairable, but a technician should confirm that before anyone relights a burner.
