A pool heat pump is an air conditioner running backwards: it pulls heat out of the outside air and pushes it into the water through a titanium coil. That makes it cheap to run in our climate, and it makes it fail in the same ways your AC condenser does. Fan motors, capacitors, sensors, contactors, then a refrigerant leak somewhere on a coil that spent eight winters a mile from the ocean. The unit that “runs but makes no heat” in December is the call we get most, and it is rarely the compressor.

Why it loses heat below 50F, and what salt air does
A heat pump only moves heat that is already in the air. At 80F it makes its rated 110,000 or 140,000 BTU. At 50F the output drops by a third or more, the coil starts frosting, and the unit spends part of every hour defrosting itself instead of heating water. That is by design, not a fault. The cold snaps we get here run two or three days, so the practical answer is to start the heater earlier in the week and keep a cover on the pool at night. Salt air is the other story. The evaporator coil is aluminum fins on copper tube, sitting outside year-round. Within a mile of the beach the fins corrode and the copper pits, and by year six to nine we are chasing pinhole leaks. The titanium heat exchanger on the water side rarely fails, which is why a heat pump can outlive a gas heater on the same pad. Rinsing the coil with fresh water every few months helps more than anything.
Sensors, boards and LP/HP faults
Most heat pumps use three or four thermistors: water in, water out, air, and coil or defrost. When one drifts, the display lies, the unit short-cycles, or it refuses to run in weather it should handle. Sensors run $180 to $300 replaced and we check all of them on the same visit. Control boards on AquaCal and HeatPro units take a hit from lightning every summer; a board is $400 to $800, and a surge protector at the disconnect is the cheapest insurance on the pad.
LP and HP faults are the two you will see most. LP means low refrigerant pressure, which in Florida means a leak, not “it needs a charge.” HP means the heat could not get out: a fan motor spinning slow on a bad capacitor, a coil packed with pollen and dryer lint, or the water side restricted. Repair or replace
Capacitors, sensors, fan motors, switches and boards are worth doing at any age. The line moves at the compressor and at the evaporator coil. On a unit under eight years old with a clean coil, a compressor at $1,200 to $2,200 is a fair repair. On a unit past ten years, with a coil that already has a patched leak, the same compressor plus a recharge lands within a couple thousand of a new 140k BTU unit at $4,500 to $7,500 installed, and the new one heats faster on the same electric bill.
