Hayward sells more gas pool heaters in South Florida than anyone else, so we see more of them broken than anyone else. The H-Series is a solid design with a cupro-nickel exchanger and a forced-draft burner, and it fails in predictable places: the igniter, the blower vacuum switch, the thermistor, the ignition module, and, when the water chemistry has been wrong for a couple of seasons, the heat exchanger itself. The display tells you a lot. Most owners just do not know what LO or AO means, and the pool guy resets it until it stops resetting.

A heater that “locks out” after three tries is doing what the safety logic asks. We do not bypass it. We find the part that caused the third failure, replace it, and clear the lockout properly.
Reading the H-Series codes
IF is ignition failure. Three attempts, no flame proven, lockout. On the FD models it is usually the hot-surface igniter, which cracks from age, or the flame sensor rod coated with white oxide.
LO means the limit string is open. That string runs through the water pressure switch, the high limit sensors on the exchanger, the thermal fuse and the vent pressure switch in series, and any one of them opening kills the call for heat. Low flow trips the pressure switch more than anything: dirty cartridge filter, pump on a low VS speed, a valve someone half closed. AO and bO both point at the blower vacuum switch. AO is the switch failing to close when the blower runs; bO is the switch sitting closed when it should be open. HS is the heater shutting itself down because the water leaving the exchanger is rising too fast, another flow problem. CE is the keypad losing the board. PF is power.
The ignition control module is the brain under the front panel, $350 to $550 replaced. It goes from moisture, surges, and heat. We meter the inputs and outputs before calling it dead, because a bad thermistor or a wet connector will make a good module look guilty.
Heat exchanger corrosion and water chemistry
The exchanger on an H400FD is cupro-nickel tube, and it will last fifteen years if the water is kept close to a pH of 7.4 and chlorine under 5 ppm. Salt pools tend to drift high on pH, and inline chlorinators dump acid right into the heater when the pump stops. Both eat copper. Once we see green or rust weeping at the headers, the exchanger has maybe a season left. Replacement runs $900 to $1,600, and it only makes sense on a heater with a sound burner tray and control board. Check the bypass valve while you are in there; a stuck internal bypass sends too much water through the tubes and sets up the same HS shutdown you would blame on the filter.

Repair or replace
Igniters, switches, thermistors, modules and blowers are worth doing on any H-Series that is under twelve years old. The exchanger is the line. If it is leaking and the heater is past ten years, a new H400FD at $3,800 to $5,500 installed brings a fresh exchanger, a fresh warranty and a burner that lights on the first try, for roughly twice the cost of the exchanger alone. If the heater is five years old and the exchanger went because of chemistry, we replace the exchanger and fix the chemistry, because the rest of the unit has plenty left.
