GE Cafe Induction Cooktop Not Heating — Diagnosing Element and Coil Failures

You bought the GE Cafe CHP9530SJSS induction cooktop two years ago specifically for the precision and the easy-clean glass surface. It’s been the workhorse of your Doral kitchen, dinner most nights for a family of four. Last night you set the All-Clad stainless on the front-right burner, hit power, the display lit up, you saw the “Pan” indicator come on for half a second and then it flashed off. Element won’t engage. The other three burners work fine. The pan is the same one you’ve used for two years.

Induction cooktops feel like magic when they work and complicated machinery when they don’t. The good news: most “won’t heat” complaints on a GE Cafe induction (or the related Profile and Monogram models) trace to one of a handful of specific causes that are diagnosable without exotic tools. The bad news: parts are expensive when they do fail. Here’s the rundown.

How Induction Heats and Why Cookware Matters

A quick refresher on the physics, because diagnosis depends on it. Each induction burner is actually a copper coil under the glass surface. When you turn it on, the coil generates a rapidly alternating magnetic field. If a ferromagnetic pan sits in that field, the magnetic field induces electrical currents in the pan iron, and those currents heat the pan directly. No heat is generated by the cooktop itself, the pan is the heater.

This is why induction needs ferromagnetic cookware. Cast iron, magnetic stainless (most All-Clad, Henckels, Demeyere), and carbon steel all work. Aluminum, copper, glass, and most cheaper stainless do not work. If a magnet sticks to the bottom of your pan, the pan works on induction. If a magnet falls off, it doesn’t.

Why this matters for diagnosis: a “burner not heating” complaint is sometimes a cookware problem, not a cooktop problem. Even pans that have always worked can develop issues. Warped bottoms (very common after 2-3 years of daily use, especially on Cuisinart MultiClad and similar mid-grade stainless) prevent full contact with the glass, the burner doesn’t detect a pan, the “Pan” indicator flashes off, and the burner shuts down.

Step One: The Cookware Test

Before disassembling anything, do this:

1. Take a cast iron pan (proven 100% ferromagnetic, perfectly flat bottom). If you don’t own one, your neighbor with a Lodge skillet will lend you one for an hour.
2. Place the cast iron on the burner that won’t heat.
3. Turn it on.
4. If the cast iron heats, your cookware was the problem. Replace the suspect pan or use it on different cookware.
5. If the cast iron doesn’t heat, there’s a real cooktop problem.

This 5-minute test resolves roughly 25% of “burner won’t heat” complaints on induction cooktops. Worth doing first.

Step Two: Error Codes

GE Cafe induction cooktops display fault codes when they detect internal issues. Common codes:

F1 or F11: Cooktop sensor fault. Usually means a thermistor on the coil assembly is reading out of range. Sometimes resets after a power cycle (breaker off 60 seconds, back on). If it persists, the coil assembly needs service.

F2: Overheating. The coil’s internal temperature sensor is reading above limit. Could be a cooling fan failure (the cooktop has internal fans to cool the inverter), or could be a sensor failure. Let the cooktop cool for an hour, try again. If it persists, fan or sensor issue.

F3 or F31-F35: Inverter board fault. Each burner is driven by an inverter board that converts AC to the high-frequency AC needed by the coil. These boards do fail.

F7: Communication error between user interface and main board. Often clears after a power cycle.

F47 or F48: Communication error between modules. Usually a wiring connector that has worked loose. Service tech can often fix in one visit.

If you see a code, write it down. Note when it appears (immediately on power-on, after heating starts, only on specific burners). That information halves the diagnostic time when you call a tech.

Step Three: The Inverter Board

Each burner on a GE Cafe induction cooktop is powered by a separate inverter board. If only one burner fails and others work fine, the most likely culprit is the inverter board for that specific burner. These boards (GE part WB27X32200, WB27X32201, or similar by model year) cost $250-450 each.

Inverter board failure typically follows one of two patterns:

Sudden death: Burner worked fine yesterday, won’t work at all today. No detection of pan, no display response, no clicking sounds. The inverter is dead.

Intermittent overheat: Burner works for 5-15 minutes then shuts off with F2 or F31. Lets it cool, works again briefly. The inverter is partially failing, generating excess internal heat, hitting its protection circuit.

Inverter replacement is a tech-level repair. The cooktop has to be pulled from the countertop (carefully, the glass is fragile), the bottom cover removed, the failed board identified and swapped. Step Four: The Coil Itself

The induction coil under the glass rarely fails outright. When it does, the cause is usually water damage or thermal stress. Water intrusion happens if a spill goes through a damaged glass surface or runs down the side gaskets. Salt water (some Miami homes near the beach have unintentional salt aerosol exposure) accelerates coil corrosion if it gets inside.

Symptoms of coil failure:

• Burner shows F11 sensor error that doesn’t clear
• Burner detects pan but heats very weakly
• Burner makes unusual buzzing or rattling at certain power levels
• Visible discoloration through the glass over the coil area

Coil replacement is the most expensive single repair on an induction cooktop. Parts run $400-700 depending on the specific burner size. Labor is 2-3 hours. Total often approaching $1,000.

At that price point, on a cooktop over 8 years old, replacement of the whole unit starts to make sense. A new GE Cafe CHP9530 is $2,200-2,800. If you’re 5 years in and the rest of the cooktop is working fine, the coil repair is worth it. If you’re 9 years in and you’re looking at potentially the second coil, replace the cooktop.

Step Five: Less Common Causes

Power supply issue: Induction cooktops need 240V. If one leg of the 240V is low (around 100V instead of 120V), the cooktop won’t get the full power it needs. Causes can be a loose connection at the breaker, a degrading connection at the cooktop terminal block, or a problem upstream at the panel. Measure with a multimeter at the cooktop terminals (with power on, carefully). Should read 240V across the two hot legs, 120V from each hot to neutral, 120V from each hot to ground.

Cooling fan failure: The internal cooling fans run during cooking. If one fails, the cooktop will eventually shut down with F2 overheat. Listen during operation, if you hear a grinding fan noise or no fan noise at all, the fan needs replacement. Fans are $50-100 in parts, 60-minute labor.

Touch surface degradation: Sometimes the issue isn’t heating at all, it’s that the touch control isn’t reading your finger press correctly. Touch glass that’s been spilled on regularly and not cleaned with the recommended cleaner can develop a film that interferes with capacitive sensing. Clean the surface with Cerama Bryte cooktop cleaner and check if touch response improves before assuming an electrical fault.

Why Florida Conditions Matter

Induction cooktop electronics live in a confined space under the glass. The internal cooling system is designed for ambient 75-85 F. In a Miami kitchen during the summer, the cabinet space under the cooktop can sit at 95+ F if the AC isn’t reaching the kitchen well. The inverter boards run at the top of their thermal envelope.

If your kitchen is unusually warm or your cooktop is installed in a cabinet with poor ventilation (sometimes the case in 1960s-1970s Coral Gables and Coconut Grove kitchens that were retrofitted with modern cooktops), expect more thermal-related issues. Service the cooling system early.

Salt air at coastal homes (Sunny Isles, Surfside, Key Biscayne) does eventually corrode internal electronics. Most induction cooktops 5+ years old in coastal homes show some terminal block oxidation when serviced.

When to Call

The cookware test you can do yourself in 5 minutes. The error code lookup you can do yourself. Beyond that, induction cooktop service is technical work that requires specialized parts and the ability to safely handle the glass-top assembly.
