Buy the dryer that matches the hookup you already have. If your laundry area has a gas line and a 110V outlet, a gas dryer usually costs less to run and dries a touch hotter. If you only have a 240V electric outlet and no gas, an electric dryer is the obvious choice — and converting is rarely worth the cost. Reliability between the two is close; the difference is in what breaks, not how often. Don’t pay to add a gas line just to “save on energy” — the math almost never works out in South Florida.

• Electric dryer: requires a dedicated 240V outlet. Most all-electric homes and many condos have this and nothing else.

Gas is generally cheaper to operate than electricity for drying, because natural gas typically costs less per unit of heat. A gas dryer also tends to run hotter and finish loads slightly faster. Over years of heavy use, that adds up — but the gap is modest, and in a Florida household that line-dries half the year or does light laundry, you may never notice it.
