A refrigerator ice maker that stopped working is almost never a reason to replace the refrigerator itself. The ice maker module, water inlet valve, or fill tube that actually failed runs $150 to $260 to repair, sometimes up to $320 on higher-end built-in units with a separate ice maker compartment. Replacing an otherwise healthy refrigerator over an ice maker problem trades a $200 repair for a $2,000 to $2,500 purchase to fix one feature on a machine that is still cooling food perfectly.
The ice maker is a small system bolted onto a bigger one
A refrigerator’s ice maker runs independently of the compressor and the cooling system that keeps food cold. It has its own water inlet valve, a small motor and mold assembly that cycles water into a tray and ejects it into the bin, and on some models a separate module that senses when the bin is full. None of that touches the refrigeration circuit at all. A refrigerator can have a completely dead ice maker and a perfectly healthy compressor and cooling system at the same time, which is the situation we see on the majority of these calls.
A Weston case
A 2019 LG French-door refrigerator in Weston stopped producing ice while cooling normally on both sides. The cause was the ice maker module itself, the assembly that cycles the tray and ejects cubes, worn out after five years of daily cycling, $165 in parts, $245 installed. The homeowner had priced a full refrigerator replacement first, assuming the ice maker issue meant a bigger problem, and the quote for a comparable new French-door unit came to $2,400 to $2,900 installed with tax, delivery and haul-away. The ice maker repair was roughly a tenth of that.
Repair cost by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Typical repair |
|---|---|---|
| No ice, bin empty | Ice maker module, water inlet valve | $150-260 |
| Small or hollow cubes | Water filter clogged, low water pressure, inlet valve partially failed | $60-180 |
| Ice tastes or smells off | Water filter overdue, line needs flushing | $40-90 |
| Ice maker won’t stop or overflows | Shutoff arm or optical sensor failure | $120-220 |
| Leak from ice maker area | Fill tube frozen and split, or valve leaking | $150-300 |
The water filter gets blamed for more than it causes
An overdue water filter restricts flow enough to produce small or hollow cubes and slow ice production, and it is the cheapest thing on this list to fix, a $40 to $70 filter swap in most cases. It rarely explains a completely dead ice maker with zero cubes over several days; that points to the module or the inlet valve instead. A technician checks the filter first because it is the fastest thing to rule out, but do not expect a filter change alone to fix a fully non-functional ice maker.
Built-in versus dispenser models
A basic in-freezer ice maker with no door dispenser is the simplest version of this system and the cheapest to repair, usually landing at the lower end of the range in the table above. A French-door or side-by-side model with a through-the-door dispenser adds a dispenser motor, an auger, and a chute heater to melt any ice that jams near the door, each an independent part that fails on its own schedule. A dispenser that stopped delivering ice while the ice maker itself is still producing and storing cubes normally points to the auger motor or the dispenser control switch, not the ice maker module, and it is usually a $130 to $210 repair separate from anything upstream.
When an ice maker problem does point to something bigger
If the ice maker stopped at the same time the refrigerator itself started running warm or cycling oddly, that is not a coincidence and it changes the diagnosis entirely, because both systems can share a control board on some models. A single frozen fill tube that keeps refreezing after repair, despite a new inlet valve, sometimes points to a freezer running too cold from a bad thermostat, worth checking together. Outside of those linked cases, an ice maker that fails on its own, with the rest of the refrigerator working normally, is a contained, inexpensive repair almost every time.
