KitchenAid French-door fridges (KRFC, KRSC, KRMF series) use the same ice maker architecture across most models — a freezer-door-mounted ice bucket with an auger that pushes cubes to the dispenser. When ice production drops from 6 lb/day to 1 lb/day without any leak or freezer warming, owners assume “ice maker died” and ask for replacement. Half the time the ice maker is fine and the auger or its sensor is the problem.
The ice path components
- Water inlet valve (back of fridge, lower right) — fills the ice maker
- Ice maker module (top of freezer) — freezes and ejects cubes into bucket
- Ice bucket with auger (door-mounted) — stores cubes and pushes them to dispenser
- Auger motor at the bucket — provides rotational torque
- Optical sensors (emitter + receiver) — tell the control how full the bucket is
Diagnostic flow
Slow production but normal cube quality:
- If cubes look correct (clear, full size) but you only get a few per day — the auger is bridging or the optical sensor is reading “full” when it is not
- If cubes are hollow, partial, or oddly shaped — that is a different problem (water flow, fill cycle, freeze time). See our hollow ice cubes guide
Optical sensor test
The bucket has an emitter on one side, a receiver on the other. Beam of infrared light. When ice fills high enough to block the beam, the control stops production. Bridged ice can block the beam below the actual ice level — production stops at half-full.
- Pull the ice bucket completely out
- Look for the two sensors — small black plastic windows on the side walls of the bucket cavity
- Clean both with a damp cloth, then a dry microfiber. Fingerprints and dust block the beam
- Reinstall bucket, run the ice maker test cycle (hold the door switch or push the test button on the module for 3 seconds)
Auger motor torque test
If the dispenser pushes only a few cubes then stops while there is clearly more ice in the bucket, the auger is bridging — ice freezing together into a solid mass — or the auger motor is weak.
- Pull the bucket. Stick a wooden spoon handle into the bucket and try to rotate the auger by hand. It should turn freely with mild resistance
- If it is bound solid, ice has cemented around it. Empty the bucket, let it warm in the sink for 30 minutes, refill, and reinstall
- If the bucket turns freely but the dispenser still does not push ice, the motor itself is failing. Auger motor part W10884390 (varies by model) about $90, labor 30 min
The bucket-sensor reset that fixes it half the time
The control board tracks “bucket full” state. When the bucket is removed for cleaning and reinstalled, sometimes the state does not clear. Hard reset:
- Unplug the fridge for 5 minutes
- While unplugged, pull the ice bucket, dump it into the sink, wipe it dry
- Plug fridge back in. Wait 4 hours before reinstalling the bucket
- Reinstall the bucket, push it in until it clicks firmly
If none of this works
The ice maker module itself may be the issue — the thermostat that detects the ice harvest temperature, or the eject motor. KitchenAid uses different module part numbers across the same series; we look up by serial number, not model number. Module replacement is $130-180 part, 45 min labor.
