The first storm of the season hadn’t even named itself yet and your neighbor was already trimming the ficus. You looked at the kitchen and ran the mental tally. Fridge, two ovens, dishwasher, washer, dryer, wine cooler, ice maker. Maybe $18,000 of appliances if you replaced everything at retail. The last hurricane season took out an LG fridge on your block and a Samsung washer two doors down, both because the homeowners weren’t around when power restored after the storm. You don’t want to be that house this year.

Hurricane season in South Florida runs from June 1 to November 30, with peak activity in late August through October. We get more compressor and control-board failure calls in September than any other month, and almost all of them trace back to the same handful of preventable mistakes. Here’s how to actually protect a kitchen full of expensive equipment.

The Real Threat Isn’t the Outage, It’s the Restore

Most homeowners assume the danger from a hurricane is the loss of power. It’s not. A 24-hour outage with the fridge sealed shut won’t damage anything except possibly your groceries. The real damage happens in two windows.

The first is during the outage if the lines go down hot. Lightning strikes and downed trees can induce transients on the electrical lines that reach appliances even when the main breaker is tripped, depending on how the damage occurred. Rare but it happens.

The second and far more common is when power restores. Utility companies don’t bring a neighborhood back online with a clean steady 120 volts. They energize substations in stages, and during the first 5 to 30 minutes of restored power, voltage can swing between 90 and 145 volts unpredictably as load balances. Compressors, control boards, and inverter drives are the first things to die in that window.

We’ve had customers tell us “the fridge was working fine before the storm and now it won’t start.” That’s the restore window damage. A 5-minute brownout that ended at 8:14 AM probably toasted the start capacitor or the main board.

Step One: Unplug or Disconnect Before the Storm Arrives

The single most effective protection costs zero dollars. If a named storm is in the cone of probability for your zip code and a watch or warning is issued, unplug every plug-in appliance you can. Fridge, microwave, wine cooler, countertop appliances. Anything hardwired (most range/oven, most dishwasher, some washer/dryer) trip its dedicated breaker at the panel.

This isolates the appliance from whatever happens on the grid during and after the storm. The fridge will hold food for 24 to 36 hours unopened. The freezer will hold for 36 to 48. After the grid stabilizes (usually 30 minutes to a couple hours after restore in your neighborhood), plug things back in.

The downside is you have to be home, or at least within driving distance, to actually do it. People who evacuate to Orlando before the storm aren’t going to come back to unplug their fridge. Which leads to step two.

Step Two: Whole-House Surge Protection

A whole-house surge protector installed at the main electrical panel is the best protection if you can’t always be home to unplug. These devices clamp incoming voltage spikes and route excess to ground before they reach branch circuits. Cost installed is roughly $400 to $800 depending on the panel, brand, and electrician rates in your area.

Eaton CHSPT2ULTRA, Square D HEPD80, Siemens FS140, and Leviton 51120 are all solid choices in the $200 to $350 hardware range. Install runs another $200 to $500 in labor through a licensed electrician. Has to be installed by a licensed electrician, this is not a DIY breaker swap.

The math on whole-house protection works out fast in Miami-Dade. One compressor replacement on a Sub-Zero or KitchenAid built-in fridge is $700 to $1100 in parts and labor. One main board on a high-end LG washer is $400 to $600. A whole-house unit pays for itself the first time it catches a real surge.

Step Three: Point-of-Use Surge Strips for the Big Stuff

If you can’t justify the whole-house install, the next-best option is point-of-use surge protectors behind each major appliance. Look for the joule rating, 1800 joules minimum for major appliances, 2500+ for things like a built-in fridge or wine cooler.

Tripp Lite ISOBAR4ULTRA, APC P11VT3, and Eaton PSP15S are all reasonable choices in the $30 to $80 range. Note that some appliance surge protectors are designed to fit in a standard 110V outlet with the appliance plug bypass-through, no extension cord. Important behind a fridge where there’s only a few inches of clearance.

Surge strips have a finite life. After they absorb a major surge they may not protect against the next one. Most have an indicator light. If the light is off, replace the strip. Strips also degrade over time even without major events. Plan on replacement every 5 to 7 years.

Step Four: GFCI and Breaker Practices During Restore

When power comes back, don’t immediately turn every breaker on. Wait 5 to 10 minutes for the grid to settle, then bring on circuits one at a time starting with the lowest-load loads (lights, ceiling fans). Save the major appliance circuits for last, after the line voltage has had time to stabilize.

Listen for the compressor when you bring the fridge back online. A healthy start is a quiet click followed by a smooth ramp-up. If you hear clicking-humming-clicking patterns (the start relay protecting against a struggling motor), pull the plug immediately. Continuing to power cycle a compressor with a damaged start circuit will burn the windings in minutes.

The signs of post-surge damage that need attention right away:

  • Fridge runs but doesn’t cool over the next 4 to 6 hours
  • Washer panel is dark or shows random LED patterns
  • Dishwasher panel is on but no buttons respond
  • Range or oven display shows F-codes that didn’t appear before
  • Microwave hums but doesn’t heat food

Any of these and you’re looking at a service call. Could be a $30 part, could be a $500 board.

Step Five: Food Safety After Extended Outages

The FDA rule is straightforward. Refrigerator food held above 40 F for more than 4 hours total should be discarded. Freezer food that has thawed (no ice crystals remaining) and is above 40 F should also go. Anything that stayed below 40 in the fridge or still had ice crystals in the freezer is safe to keep.

After a 24-hour outage, most fridges in Florida ambient will have warmed to 55+ F internally. You’re throwing out the meat, dairy, leftovers, cut produce, and prepared foods. You can keep unopened condiments (mustard, ketchup, soy sauce), hard cheeses, butter for short periods, and whole produce that wasn’t cut.

For freezers, the rule is “if it has ice crystals it can be refrozen safely.” Most chest freezers hold below 40 F for 36+ hours unopened, so they often survive outages better than the fridge.

If you’ve got a homeowner’s policy that covers food loss after named storms, document everything. Take photos with timestamps before you throw it out, save receipts where you have them. Most South Florida policies have $500 to $1500 of food coverage that almost nobody uses because they don’t bother documenting.

Salt Air and Outdoor Kitchen Considerations

If you have an outdoor kitchen in Hallandale Beach, Sunny Isles, or any coastal property, the storm season hits twice. Once with the direct power surge and again with salt-spray corrosion that follows wind-driven rain.

Outdoor refrigeration units (Lynx, U-Line outdoor models, Hestan) are built with marine-grade stainless and sealed electronics, but the seals fail eventually. After every named storm, inspect the access panel gaskets and the back of any outdoor unit for moisture intrusion. Run a fresh water rinse over the condenser to wash off salt deposits. If the unit is running rough after the storm but powering up normally, it might just need a cleaning.

Post-Storm Service Call Patterns

Service demand peaks in the week after every named storm landfall. We get hit hard enough that schedules push out to 4 to 7 days even with extended hours. If you suspect surge damage, call as soon as you do, even if the appliance is “kind of working.” Getting on the list early matters.

Berne Appliance Repair runs storm-season schedules across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County. Most common post-storm repairs are start capacitors on compressors ($95 to $145 total), main control boards on washers and dishwashers ($280 to $480 total), and igniter or sensor failures on gas ranges from voltage drop damage ($140 to $220 total). $59 service call, waived on repair. Call (754) 345-4515 or book through our refrigerator repair page. For coastal areas see appliance repair in Sunny Isles, refrigerator repair in Aventura, or washer repair in Hallandale Beach.

A 30-minute prep routine before each storm and a careful restore process after probably saves the average South Florida homeowner one to two thousand dollars across a typical hurricane season. Worth the small effort.
