You came down to the Hollywood kitchen Saturday morning, hit the coffee maker, glanced at the Frigidaire FGHB2868TF French-door fridge, and saw “SY EF” flashing on the front display where the temperature numbers should be. The fridge feels cold. The freezer feels cold. The ice maker even dropped a fresh batch overnight. But the panel is flashing a code you’ve never seen and the digits keep cycling between “SY EF” and what looks like “5Y EF.” You search the user manual that’s still sitting in the drawer from when the fridge was delivered four years ago, and the troubleshooting section is one page long with nothing about SY codes.

Frigidaire’s self-diagnostic system is more talkative than most. The fridge has temperature sensors on the fresh-food side, freezer side, evaporator, and condenser, plus a defrost sensor and damper sensors on the higher-end Gallery and Professional models. When any one of them reads out of range or stops responding entirely, the main control board posts a code on the front display. Some are minor. Some mean the fridge is about to fail outright. Here’s what each common code actually means and what to do about it.

SY EF — Evaporator Fan Failure

This is the most common Frigidaire code we see in the field. SY EF means the evaporator fan in the freezer compartment isn’t running at the speed the control board expects, or isn’t running at all. The board reads fan RPM through a tach signal. If RPM is below threshold, you get SY EF.

The fan is what circulates cold air from the freezer evaporator coil into both the freezer and fresh-food compartments. When it fails, the freezer might still feel cold (because it’s directly adjacent to the coil), but the fresh-food side warms up over 6 to 12 hours. Milk goes off, lettuce wilts.

Common cause: the fan is iced over. A failing defrost heater or sensor lets frost build on the evaporator until the fan blades freeze in place. The fix is a manual defrost (unplug the fridge for 24 hours, dry everything, plug back in), then diagnose the defrost system. Less common: the fan motor itself has failed. Frigidaire’s small DC evaporator fan motor (part 5304507202 on many 2018-2023 French-door models) runs $90 to $130 in parts, $220 to $290 installed.

If SY EF clears on its own after a power cycle and doesn’t come back, the fan’s bearings are probably failing intermittently. It’ll come back. Plan a service call before food spoils again.

SY CF — Communication Failure (Main Board)

SY CF means the user interface board (the display) can’t talk to the main control board. This is almost always a wiring connector that has worked loose, or a control board that has partially failed.

First thing to try: power cycle. Unplug the fridge for 5 minutes, plug back in. If the code clears and doesn’t return, it was a transient. If it returns within 24 hours, the main board likely needs replacement (Frigidaire part 5304504715 or similar by model year, $180 to $290 in parts, $350 to $480 installed).

On Frigidaire Gallery French-door models built 2019-2022, our techs see a specific pattern with SY CF. The wire harness from the door hinge to the main board runs through a flex loop that fatigues after about 3,000 to 5,000 door openings. By year four, the wire breaks intermittently. The fix is a hinge harness replacement (around $80 in parts), which is a 90-minute job.

HI TEMP / HIGH TEMPERATURE Alarm

This is the “your fridge has been too warm too long” alarm. The main board logs when fresh-food temp exceeds about 55°F for 60+ minutes. Common causes in order:

  1. Door left ajar (usually overnight). Easy fix: close the door, run a faster temp setpoint to recover, dismiss the alarm.
  2. Condenser coils clogged. The bottom-front condenser coils on Frigidaire French-doors collect dog hair, kitchen dust, and general crud. By year three they need cleaning. Pop the kick panel, vacuum thoroughly, brush with a coil brush.
  3. Condenser fan motor failure. Symptom: the back of the fridge feels hot, the fridge cabinet feels warmer than it should, and the compressor runs constantly. Fan motor replacement runs $120 to $180 installed.
  4. Sealed system issue (refrigerant leak or failing compressor). On 4+ year-old units that have run hard in Florida heat, this is more common than people expect. Repair costs $500 to $900. On 8+ year units, replacement usually wins the math.

If HI TEMP appears and the fridge feels cold to the touch, it’s probably a stuck thermistor reading high. SY EF or SY CE might come up at the same time.

SY CE — Cabinet Sensor Failure

SY CE means the fresh-food cabinet temperature sensor is out of range or open-circuit. The sensor itself (a small thermistor with a two-wire pigtail) usually costs $35 to $55, $180 to $230 installed. The sensor sits in the back wall of the fresh-food compartment behind a small plastic cover.

If you ignore SY CE, the fridge defaults to a fail-safe mode where the compressor runs more than necessary, energy bills go up, but food stays cold. So it’s not an urgent failure, just an inefficient one.

SY 1F — Freezer Sensor Failure

Same idea as SY CE but on the freezer side. The freezer sensor is buried inside the freezer compartment near the evaporator. Sensor cost similar to SY CE.

A SY 1F on a Frigidaire FFHB2750TS or similar unit usually means the fridge has been running with a failed sensor for weeks. If you see it on the display, look at your freezer temp manually with a thermometer. If freezer is 5 to 10°F, you’re fine, just schedule the sensor swap. If freezer is climbing into the 20s or 30s, something else is also wrong.

SY DF — Defrost Sensor Failure

The defrost thermistor monitors evaporator temperature during the auto-defrost cycle. If it fails, the fridge can’t tell when defrost has completed, the defrost heater might run too long (or not long enough), and ice accumulates on the evaporator. Eventually you get SY EF as the fan ices over.

Treat SY DF as an early warning. Fix it before the ice buildup forces a SY EF. Defrost sensor replacement is around $200 to $280 installed, less invasive than a full evaporator de-ice.

OP — Open Door / Door Switch Issue

The OP code can mean an actual open door, but more often it’s a door switch problem. Frigidaire French-doors have reed switches in the hinges that signal door state. If one fails or sticks closed, the fridge thinks a door is open continuously, runs the cabinet warmer than setpoint (because air “exchange” is assumed), and posts OP.

Test: open and close each door slowly while watching the display. If OP clears when you close one specific door and reappears when you open it, that switch is fine. If OP persists when both doors are closed, one switch is stuck. The switch is cheap ($25 to $40), labor is the hinge access ($140 to $190 total).

SY 5C and SY 5F — System Self-Check Failures

These are catch-all codes for main board internal diagnostic failures. They usually appear right after a power surge or restore event. Power cycle (5 minutes unplugged), and if they clear, you’re done. If they persist, the main control board has failed.

Florida note: SY 5C and SY 5F spike in our call volume in September and October every year after the major lightning storms and named hurricane restore events. If you got hit by a brownout or surge and your fridge is showing one of these codes, point-of-use surge protection and possibly an appliance damage claim might apply.

What You Can Do Yourself

For any F-code, two things are worth trying before calling a tech.

First, write down the exact code (phone photo of the display is fine). Note when it appeared, whether the fridge was working before, and any unusual sounds or recent events (power outage, fridge moved, kids leaving the door open).

Second, a 5-minute power cycle. Unplug for 5 minutes (not 30 seconds), plug back in. Many codes clear if they were transient. If the code returns within 24 hours, it’s a real fault.

When to Call

Past the power cycle and a coil cleaning, F-codes mean component diagnosis. Berne Appliance Repair services Frigidaire (and Electrolux, which shares many parts and platforms) across South Florida. Our techs carry the common Frigidaire sensors, fan motors, and door switches on the truck. $59 service call, waived on repair.

Call (754) 345-4515 or book through our refrigerator repair page. For service in specific neighborhoods see refrigerator repair in Hollywood, appliance repair in Davie, or refrigerator repair in Plantation. Frigidaire self-diagnostics are useful if you know how to read them. Most codes point to a $200 to $400 fix on a fridge that has plenty of years left.
