Boat Lift Won't Go Up or Down: What Fails on a South Florida Canal, in the Order We Check It
Same-day appliance repair from a local team — 19 factory-trained technicians, 4.79★ across 1,300 customer reviews. The $59 service call is free if you proceed with the repair, and every job is backed by a parts warranty up to 10 years plus a 90-day labor warranty. $59 covers the visit and diagnosis and is credited to the repair if you go ahead. If you don't, it's the only charge.
Request service
You press the button, the boat stays in the water. On a South Florida canal that happens for a short list of reasons, and most of them are cheap. Here is the order we check them in on a service call, so you can do the first three yourself before anyone drives out.
Three things to check before you call
The breaker. Dock circuits share a panel with the pool pump and the sprinkler timer in a lot of Broward houses, and a tripped breaker on a hot afternoon is the most common “dead lift” there is. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop; something on the dock is pulling too much current or has water in it.
The remote battery. A GEM or TEC remote with a weak battery works from the dock and nowhere else. A new battery costs less than a cup of coffee. If the remote is dead but the wall switch or key switch still runs the lift, the problem is in the remote system, not the motor.
The disconnect on the dock. Most lifts have a small gray box with a pull-out or a lever between the feed and the motors. Landscapers and pressure washers knock these off. Check it is on.
Motor hums but nothing moves
This is the one we see most. A single-phase lift motor needs a start capacitor to get moving; when the capacitor fails the motor hums, warms up and does nothing. On a 110 V single-motor lift the capacitor is the first thing we test, and most of the time it is the last. The part costs around $20 and sits inside the motor cover, which is why it fails: that cover sits in the sun at 130 degrees all summer.
The other cause of a hum is a drive that cannot turn: a gearbox with a broken bearing, a drum with the cable wrapped over itself, or a belt on a flat-plate drive that jumped the pulley. You can tell them apart by the breaker. A capacitor hum goes on until you let go of the button; a seized drive trips the breaker within a few seconds.
One side goes up, the other stays down
Two-motor four-post lifts lose one side at a time. One capacitor, one contactor, or one motor with water in the windings. The cradle rises crooked, the boat leans on a guide post and the good cables take all the load. Stop where you are. Running a lift one-sided is how you turn a $150 capacitor into a bent top beam and a cable set.
Lift stalls halfway up or trips the breaker under load
Usually voltage. A long run of thin wire from the house to the dock drops the voltage under load, the motor pulls more amps to compensate, and the breaker opens. Hi-Tide, for example, requires 220 V once a lift has two 1 hp motors, and plenty of docks built in the 1980s and 1990s still have a 110 V feed that was fine for a smaller motor. Bearings on their way out do the same thing: the motor works harder every month until the breaker notices.
The check is simple: voltage at the motor terminals with the lift moving, not at rest. If it sags below about 105 V on a 110 V lift, the fix is in the wiring, and that is electrician work. If the voltage holds and the motor still stalls, the motor or gearbox is the problem, and that is ours.
Lift will not stop at the top
An upper limit switch, the Auto-Stop on GEM systems, is supposed to cut the motor before the cable over-wraps on the drum. When its arm is bent or the switch is corroded the lift keeps going, the cable climbs onto itself and kinks. An over-wrapped cable has to be unwound by hand and inspected. If it kinked, it gets replaced; a kink in stainless cable is a broken strand waiting to happen.
Grinding, squealing, a clunk on every start
Dry bearings. The top beam of a cable lift has grease fittings on every bearing and every sheave, and they want marine grease twice a year. A sheave that has stopped turning does not roll the cable, it saws it, and it gets through a 5/16 stainless cable in one season. If your lift squeals, the cables are already wearing.
Cable looks fine at the boat but is rusting at the drum
The cable wears where it bends, and it bends most at the drum. Broken strands, a rust bloom or a flat spot on the wraps mean the set is done. Manufacturers allow five years on stainless cable; on a salt canal we would not push past three. Cables are replaced as a set of four (or two on a PWC lift), never one, so the load stays level.
Gearbox leaking or clicking
Direct-drive lifts use a sealed gearbox with the motor bolted to it. Oil on the top beam under the box or a click under load means the gears or bearings inside are gone. Some boxes can be rebuilt, most are replaced as a unit and the old motor goes back on if it tests good. Flat-plate drives are simpler: a worn belt or a cracked pulley, an hour of work.
What it costs
A capacitor or a toggle switch replaced runs $150 to $280 with the trip. A remote receiver board with the part is $650 to $950. A motor, 3/4 to 1.5 hp, is $700 to $1,500 installed. A gearbox is $900 to $2,200 depending on the lift. A cable set on a four-post lift is $650 to $1,300. Those are typical South Florida ranges; the exact number comes as a written quote after the $59 service call, which is free when you approve the repair.
When to leave it alone and call
A lift that went under water in a surge, a motor that trips the breaker on the first second, a cradle hanging crooked with a boat on it, or a cable with visible broken strands. None of those get better with another push of the button. Berne repairs boat lifts, davits and jet ski lifts across Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach, from the dock disconnect to the cable; the page on boat lift repair lists the lifts, the controls and the pricing. Dispatch: (754) 345-4515, 7 AM to 9 PM, same-day slots most days.
