Samsung Family Hub refrigerators put a 21-inch tablet on the door and a lot of firmware behind it. When firmware updates fail mid-install (Miami brownouts during overnight updates do this routinely) the fridge goes into a state where the tablet won’t boot but the cooling system runs. Or, worse, the cooling stops and 21E or 22E codes blink. Here is what each means and how to recover.
21E — refrigerator evaporator fan error
The fresh-food side evaporator fan is not turning, or the Hall sensor on it is reporting bad data. Causes in order of frequency:
- Ice buildup on the fan blade — usually from a door left ajar or a gasket issue letting humid air in. Defrost for 24 hours with the unit off, then test
- Fan motor failure — part DA31-00362A about $65, labor 1 hour
- Wire harness damaged at the freezer panel — pinched during a prior service
- Main control board (PBA) sending bad command — least common, requires diagnostic
22E — ice room or freezer evaporator fan error
Same architecture as 21E but on the freezer/ice side. Diagnostic is identical: defrost test first, then fan motor, then harness, then board. Ice room fan part DA31-00352B around $55.
The firmware update brick
Family Hub tablets auto-update overnight. If a Miami summer brownout hits during install, the tablet locks at “Updating…” for hours, then either reboots blank or just sits frozen. The cooling system has its own MCU so the fridge keeps running, but you lose voice/touch/Wi-Fi/cameras.
The Samsung-approved reset sequence
Most Family Hub tablet issues clear with this. Do this with cold-side temperatures stable, not when 21E/22E is also showing.
- Open both fresh-food doors and the freezer drawer
- Locate the “test mode” button on the control board behind the right-door hinge cover (small hinged plastic flap above the door)
- Hold the button 8 seconds until the tablet beeps and reboots
- Wait 10 minutes for full tablet boot — let it complete before touching
If the tablet still does not boot, the next step is a tablet board replacement — Samsung part DA92-00xxxx (varies by model) typically $400-550. At that cost, you might prefer to disable the tablet and treat it as a regular fridge. The cooling does not need the tablet to operate.
Disabling the Family Hub tablet
The cooling system has a separate control. You can have a tech disconnect the tablet harness at the control board and the fridge continues to work as a non-smart unit. We do this for owners who do not want to spend $500 on a tablet they used twice.
