LG Washer LE, UE, and IE Error Codes — Deep-Dive Diagnostic

LG washers throw three error codes that owners see most often: LE, UE, and IE. They look similar (two letters) but mean very different things. Mixing them up is why owners replace the wrong part three times. Here is the technician decode and the diagnostic priority for each.

LE — motor or rotor lock

LE means the control board commanded the motor to spin but the rotor either did not turn or turned at the wrong speed. The cause is one of:

1. Stator sensor (Hall sensor): part 6501KW2002A on most direct-drive models. The Hall sensor reports rotor position to the control. When it dies the board thinks the rotor is stuck and trips LE. Cost: $35 part, 45 min labor
2. Rotor itself loose: the rotor is held on by one large center bolt. If the bolt loosens (rare but happens) the rotor wobbles and LE triggers. Re-torque to 70 ft-lb
3. Stator coil shorted: rare on direct-drive but possible at year 10+. Resistance check across the three coil leads should read 3-5 ohms balanced. Imbalance means dead coil. Full motor replacement $280 part
4. Wire harness chewed: we see this in homes with rodents in walls. Pull the back panel, inspect

UE — unbalanced load

UE is not always a fault — sometimes it is just a heavy bath mat on one side of the drum. Try this first:

• Open the door, redistribute the load, restart spin cycle
• If it happens on every load including small even ones, suspect the suspension rods or shock absorbers
• Suspension rods (4 of them) cost $80 for the set, labor 1.5 hours. They go soft after year 6-8
• If UE happens at low spin speeds too, the drum spider arm could be cracked — that is a $300 part and 3 hours of work, repair-vs-replace decision time

IE — water inlet error

IE means the washer did not detect water flow within the timeout window. Diagnostic order:

1. Turn off both supply valves, then back on fully. Half-open valves throw IE on hot fills
2. Pull both supply hoses at the washer end, check the inlet screens for sediment. Common in South Florida with hard water. Clean with a toothbrush
3. Check water pressure — LG requires 20-120 PSI. Some condo systems run low. A pressure gauge ($15) on a hose bib tells you fast
4. If pressure and screens are fine, the inlet valve itself is failed. Part 5220FR2008L runs $55, labor 30 min

The mistake that costs $400

Owners see LE, search YouTube, watch a video for “LG washer LE code”, and replace the entire motor for $280 plus labor. Then the LE comes back in two weeks because the actual problem was the Hall sensor — the cheap part. Always read the resistance of the Hall sensor and the stator coils before condemning the motor.

Hard reset before parts

For any of these codes, before ordering parts, try a 5-minute power-off reset. Unplug the washer, hold the start button for 10 seconds (releases capacitor charge), wait 5 minutes, plug back in. About 20% of “error code” calls clear with this. The control board RAM gets corrupted by South Florida brownouts and a hard reset clears it.
