Wolf gas ranges use a spark-ignition system that is rock-solid for about 8 years, then starts having quirks. The clicking but no flame, the flame that lights then drops out, the burner that fires fine on high but not on simmer. Most owners just call. Half the time we find a $40 igniter and a 30-minute fix. Here is the diagnostic flow we walk through so you can either fix it yourself or call us with the right part already on the truck.
The Wolf ignition stack
Every burner has four things that have to work together:
- Spark module (one per range, sometimes one per side) — produces high-voltage pulses
- Igniter electrode at the burner — actual ceramic spark gap
- Gas valve at the burner — opens when knob is turned
- Spark switch in the knob assembly — tells the module to fire
Symptom: clicks but no flame
Spark is happening, gas is not. Three causes:
- Burner cap misaligned — pull the cap, reseat it square on the burner base. Most common after a deep clean
- Gas valve dirty or stuck — the valve has a small port that grease blocks. Spray Wolf-approved valve cleaner (or isopropyl alcohol, dry) into the valve, work the knob ten times
- LP-vs-natural-gas orifice mismatch — uncommon unless someone converted the range. If recent move/relocation, check the conversion sticker behind the kick plate
Symptom: no click, no flame
Spark module is not firing. Check in this order:
- Power to the range — Wolf ranges plug into a 120V outlet for the ignition module even though gas is the fuel. Outlet behind range tripped? Plug loose?
- Spark module wiring at the back panel — pull the back cover, look for a black box with multiple high-voltage leads. Loose terminal? Burned connector?
- Spark module itself — module part 819472 (or 815925 on older units) runs about $180. Replacement is 45 minutes once you can access it
Symptom: lights then drops out
This is the thermocouple-style flame supervision on Wolf ranges that have it (DF series with sealed burners). The flame heats a tiny rod that signals the gas valve to stay open. If the rod is dirty or fouled, the valve closes after 4-6 seconds.
- Pull the burner cap and head. The flame rod is a small ceramic rod with a wire tip near the burner
- Clean with 400-grit sandpaper, very lightly. You are removing carbon, not sanding the rod down
- If cleaning fails twice, replace the flame supervision assembly — about $90 part, 45 min labor
Symptom: works on high, not on simmer
Gas valve issue 99% of the time. The simmer port in the valve has a separate channel that clogs first. Either clean the valve or replace it (valve part varies by burner, $140-180).
Quick resistance check on the igniter electrode
With the unit unplugged, pull the spark wire off the igniter at the burner. Set a multimeter to continuity. Touch one probe to the electrode tip, one to the ceramic base near the wire. A healthy electrode reads open (no continuity). A failed one reads short — replace it. Electrode part 815892 runs about $25.
When to call Berne
If you are pulling the range out and the back panel access is intimidating, or you smell gas at any point during diagnosis, stop and call. Gas appliance work is not where to learn — too easy to leave a leak. Wolf parts have a 3-week order lead time so we keep the common stuff (electrodes, valves, spark modules) on the trucks for same-day repair.
