A Sub-Zero with a red light and an alarm is not subtle. It chirps. The light blinks. Owners panic and either unplug the unit (bad — defeats diagnostic) or hit the alarm-off button repeatedly (also bad — it tells you nothing). Here is how to read what the unit is actually telling you, model-by-model, before you call us.
What the red light means by series
- 600 / 700 series (digital display): the panel shows a service code like “Service Vac Condenser” or “Service Light” or “Service Sensor”. Read the actual words — they are diagnostic
- 500 series (LED bar only): red light + alarm = temperature out of range. No further detail. You diagnose by symptom
- BI / IC series (newest): touch panel shows specific error like “Sensor Error A2”, “Door Open”, “Service Vac Condenser”
“Service Vac Condenser” — most common
This is a reminder, not a fault. The unit’s internal counter has reached its cleaning interval. Vacuum the condenser (see our condenser cleaning guide), then reset by holding the alarm/off button for 3 seconds with the door closed.
If the message reappears within a week, the unit is detecting actual high head pressure — that is no longer a reminder, it is a real diagnostic, and the condenser is severely clogged or the fan is failing.
“Sensor Error” codes (A1, A2, B1, B2 etc.)
Each sensor letter maps to a thermistor in the cabinet:
- A1 — fresh-food evaporator sensor
- A2 — fresh-food cabinet sensor
- B1 — freezer evaporator sensor
- B2 — freezer cabinet sensor
- C1 — condenser sensor
Sensor errors are usually the wire harness, not the thermistor itself. The harness routes through a flex hinge and after 8-10 years of door cycles the copper fatigues. Part replacement (sensor + harness kit) runs $90-140, labor 1-1.5 hours.
Door alarm
If the alarm is intermittent and the red light is not solid, it is the door-ajar alarm. Check the gasket — pinched at the hinge corner is the usual cause. Also check that the door is actually closing flush. If a stacked container of leftovers is pushing a drawer 1/8″ out, the door cam will not engage.
Solid red + alarm + warm box
This is the urgent one. The unit has detected sustained out-of-range temperature. Do not silence and walk away. Options in priority order:
- Check that the condenser grill is not blocked by towels, cereal boxes on top, etc.
- Listen for the condenser fan — silent fan means motor failure (see Failure 1 in our 648PRO common failures)
- Check the freezer rear wall — ice slab = drain heater failure
- If none of these, the issue is in the sealed system (compressor or refrigerant leak) and you need a tech
What we tell condo owners to do before we arrive
Move perishables to a cooler with ice if the fresh-food side is above 45F. Sub-Zero compressors can survive an hour-long shutdown for service — your salmon cannot. Photograph the panel error before resetting so we know what code the unit logged.
